“Yeah, I'm getting that.” I roll my eyes, and he smirks a little, and that crinkle appears on the side of his eye again, making my heart skip.Shit. I clear my throat to get rid of it, and then ask, “So, I hope I didn’t cause any problems with your girlfriend.”

His eyebrows furrow in confusion.

“She came here yesterday,” I say to clarify. “She was looking for you but I told her you weren’t here and I think she might have been a little curious about what I'm doing here. I don’t want her to think anything is going on, though.”

He smirks. “Oh, don’t you?”

His tone is amused, but I nod seriously. “Yeah. You’ve been so kind to me, I don’t want to get you in trouble.”

His smile only widens and then he shakes his head. “You don’t have anything to worry about.”

“Oh. So, you talked it out?”

“There was nothing to talk about. She’s not my girlfriend.”

That stumps me. “What?”

“If you’re talking about Jane, then she’s not my girlfriend.” He moves past me into the living room and then sniffs the air like he’s a bloodhound. “You made something?”

“Um, yeah,” I murmur distractedly, still reeling over the information he just gave. “Wait, then what is she?”

He shrugs distractedly, following his nose toward the kitchen. “A former fling. We broke up a year ago, but she’s not as accepting of that as I would like.”

“Right,” I murmur. That’s why you guys kissed, I think, but I don’t say it. Instead, I tell myself that it changes nothing. Still, I can’t deny the butterflies are multiplying and there is that strange ray of hope even if this changes nothing between us. Yet, I have to clarify. “So, you’re single?’ I ask as I follow him.

“Yup.”

“But…the woman yesterday…you kissed her.”

“She kissed me,” he clarifies. “Once again, she’s not handling the breakup well.”

“Ah,” I nod. “I see.” Now his odd reaction to the kiss makes sense. I remember he looked a little puzzled and bemused.

“Yeah. Don’t really have time to date. Nor the interest.” He finally reaches the kitchen, eyes widening as he eyes the spread on the kitchen island. “You made all this?”

“Um, yeah…” I went all out this morning with everything he'd gotten for me. I made grits, sausages, bacon, French toast, and some exotic variation of a quiche. "I wanted to apologize, and also express how grateful I am to you."

“Hmm,” he murmured distractedly not taking his eyes off the table. He's eyeing it like he’s a starving man and this is his last supper. He immediately takes a seat, snagging one of the quiches from the table and popping it into his mouth. He shuts his eyes in pure ecstasy. “Fuck me, that's good.”

His moan of pleasure shoots through me, straight to my pussy, dampening it. It reminds me of the dream I had yesterday, but I force it out of my mind. “You like it?” I ask, finding my voice raspy.

“If I liked it anymore, I think I’d marry it.” His eyes slip open and the dark look has desire punching into in my stomach, echoing in my clit. I nearly squeeze my legs together to contain the sensation.

“You should get mad more often,” he comments as he continues eating. "If this is the result.”

“This isn’t always,” I say. “Sometimes I just burn things and then we end up with a whole lot of wasted food as a result.”

“Hmm,” he says again and closes his eyes savoring the combination of the food. I watch him, unable to look away. I’ve always enjoyed watching people eat my food, but with him, it’s even more pleasurable. Something tells me that he’s not a man who enjoys life much. He has a lot of money and buys a lot of expensive things, but I don’t think any of those things truly bring him joy.

I love that my food can bring him even a modicum of happiness.

The fact that he enjoys my food so strongly, makes me happy too even though I don’t exactly understand why.

“Can you cook everything?” he asks me, and I have to come back to myself to answer.

“Pretty much,” I say, then add, “I have this thing where I can make anything if I taste it once. Like I can tell all the different ingredients that make up the dish and put it together.”

He blinks at me in shock for a few seconds. “That’s incredible."
