“Yup,” she confirms with a bitter smile. “And that was the night you and I had the whole argument and everything so...it was a pretty bad day.”

“Damn,” I think. I can’t believe it, and now I feel a prick of guilt for making everything so much worse for her. I had her pegged wrong from the start.

“Yeah,” she says, but then brightens up. “But at least it’s a good thing, because I met you and might be getting a job soon, so things are looking up.”

I smile at her, impressed by her positivity. “Are you always such an optimist?”

“Yeah." She smiles back at me. “I try to be. It’s no point in always looking at the bad side of things. Sometimes, you just have to make yourself happy.”

“I’ve always thought the same."

I drive in front of the restaurant and I’m about to take off my seatbelt but she stops me with a hand on my arm.

“No,” she says and smiles at me. “I want to go in by myself.”

I raise an eyebrow.

“If they see me coming in with you, they might think that they are obligated to give me the job. But I want to win it on my own merit.”

I smile impressed by her once again. “Alright. So, how do you want to celebratewhenyou get the job?”

“We’re getting a little ahead of ourselves.” She unclasps her seatbelt, with a tiny grin. “IfI get the job, then…I don’t know. Maybe go see the Rocky Horror Picture show next year?”

“The…what?”

“It’s a travelling musical.” She smiles for real now. “They come around here about once a year, but I wasn’t able to afford tickets last time. I’m going to save up for that.”

“You love musicals?”

“Yeah. Not like I’m an aficionado or anything but I do enjoy them. And plays. And basically any vintage cinema.”

“Hmm.” I would never have guessed. This seems like a useful piece of information.

She steps out of the car and heads inside, taking a second to wave back at me.

I'm about to drive away, but then I second-guess myself. How is she going to get a ride home without me?

I mean, I could just order the same car company I did last time, but since I'm already here, why not wait for her?

Because you have a shit ton of work to do.

I ignore the voice of reason, getting out of my car and looking around. She was too nervous to make anything this morning, so I think of going to grab breakfast from the coffee shop across the street.

It takes about fifteen minutes in total to order a bagel and step out, but when I do, I hear a screeching voice behind me.

“Ollie! I thought that was your car I saw!"

Shit. I turn to see Jane coming toward me with a megawatt smile.

"Hey," I say in the friendliest tone I can imagine.

"Hi yourself," she says in what I can only describe as a flirtatious tone. "What are you doing here?"

"Not much," I say. "Just taking Delilah to an interview."

"Delilah?" The smile dims.

"Yeah," I respond, confused by the question. "I thought you knew her. She said you two met."
