She shrugs. “I just feel like you always see me like this. I’m always either crying or breaking down in front of you.”

“And that’s supposed to be a bad thing?”

She glances up to nod at me, and I’m snagged by her hazel eyes. Fuck. They’re bright and beautiful as they blink at me and I have to tear my gaze away before I do something I would regret.

“Do you have any clue who might be doing this?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “Not really.”

And then suddenly, a thought strikes me. “The first time we met, you said you thought someone was following you. Was it true or were you drunk?”

“I wasn’t drunk,” she sounds offended at the allegation. “I don’t drink.”

"So, you really thought someone was following you?” I ask.

“Yeah,” she says. “When I was walking, I thought I heard stuff…I don’t know. It might have been an animal, but at the same time, it felt like someone was chasing me.”

"Do you have any idea who?

She shakes her head. "At the time, I thought it was my date. It didn’t end well at all, so I thought maybe he was trying to find me.”

I feel a heat rise in me, along with protectiveness and jealousy. “When you say didn’t end well, what do you mean?”

She thinks about it for a few seconds before responding, "He was rude. He said a bunch of stuff to me and I left in the middle of the date, so I thought maybe he would be vengeful enough to come after me."

"Stuff like what?"

"Just you know, the usual." She seems uncomfortable talking about it. "About my weight and stuff and how I couldn’t find a boyfriend because of it."

I look at her astounded. "Was he high?"

"No." She smiles a little at my tone. "Just an asshole. Although he's probably right that I could stand to lose a few."

"Say that again and I’ll turn you over my knee right here."

Her eyes widen. "You wouldn't."

"I would," I let her see the honesty in my eyes. "You're a fucking sexy woman and anyone who says differently is clearly dumb. You shouldn't listen to them."

She doesn't seem to know quite how to take that, but then she tucks her hair behind her ear and blushes. It slightly soothes the indignation inside me, the urge to find this asshole and kick his ass for saying something so unbelievably stupid.

Although, I might kick his ass anyway if he's really the one behind the notes.

"So?" I ask. "What else happened on this date?"

She shakes her head. "Not much after that. I left and that was the last time I ever saw him. He turned out to be Rena's ex and I think he's a professor at the University." She eyes me. "Actually, I'm not sure I should be telling you this."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean...you're not going to do anything to him, right?"

I know exactly what she's asking, but I can't answer her truthfully. Instead, I divert. "Just give me his name. I need to have my PI look into him."

"You have a PI?" Her voice is stunned.

"Of course," I tell her. "Name?"

She hesitates for a few seconds, then says, "Mattings. Theo Mattings."
