“Aren’t you going to join me?”

“Yes. I’m looking forward to being your first. Again,” he added with a wicked grin that sent a bolt of electricity careening through her. “But first things first. When I booked your services, I asked for you to be present for a proposal.”

Blood roared in her ears as he reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small black box. Her breath caught as he flipped the lid to reveal a silver band with a glittering amber-colored jewel.

“When I saw this stone, citrine, it reminded me of your eyes.”

Her tears began to fall harder. “Damon...”

“Marry me, Evolet. I don’t want to go another day without you in my life.”

She framed his face in her hands and poured every ounce of love she felt into her kiss. “Yes, Damon. Yes.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger, a perfect fit.

“One moment.”

He jogged over to the wall, pressed a button and then came back over as the carousel sprung to life. Music filtered out as the horse rose up. Damon placed his foot in the stirrup and swung himself up behind her, pulling her snug against his chest.

“I think it’s one rider per horse,” she teased.

“Are you complaining?”

She felt him grow hard against her back and pressed against him, savored his groan. “Not if you’re going to take me somewhere after to seduce me.”

“Didn’t I mention that was part of you agreeing to marry me?”

She laughed and leaned back into his embrace. The carousel spun, horses rising and falling, music playing, the jewel of her ring glimmering beneath the lights.

“Damon.”

“Yes?”

“I love you.”

He pressed a tender kiss to her cheek.

“And I love you, Evolet.” She felt his smile. “We’re going to have a wonderful life together.”

EPILOGUE

Seven years later

CHARLESBRADFORDLOOKEDup at his father, a crease between his barely there eyebrows, as a horrific screeching filled the air.

“I agree, son,” Damon said with a wince. “Your sister needs more practice.”

Footsteps sounded on the stairs. Evolet walked down, a forced smile on her face as she glanced over her shoulder. Seven years of being married hadn’t stopped Damon’s breath from catching when he saw his wife. Her hair fell shorter these days, easier to manage as a mom of two and a professional cellist with the Emerald City Philharmonic.

“Yes, honey. It does sound a little better.” She shot Damon a hot look as he chuckled. “She’s holding the bow better than she did last week.”

“Too bad she’s not playing better than she did last week,” he said with an affectionate glance up at the ceiling. Rashael Bradford was proving to be a very determined, though not talented, cello player.

Evolet started to protest, then sank down into a chair next to Charlie’s highchair with a grin and kissed his chubby cheek. “Not even the slightest.”

Charlie babbled at his mother before resuming his destruction of the eggs on his plate. Wisps of blond hair had finally started to cover his bald head. Between his gummy smiles and big green eyes, Damon was besotted with his son.

As besotted as he’d been when he’d held his daughter in his arms for the first time four years ago and realized he could fall in love more than once in a lifetime.
