No, she thought as he kissed his way down her stomach,it sounds like a very, very good thing.

Damon stood and gazed down at her with a possessive need that thrilled her to her toes. She smiled up at him.

He blinked. She started to reach for him, only to let her hands drop down as she watched him stare at her with hunger blazing in his eyes before he clenched his hands into fists and took a deliberate step back.

The full weight of all the rejections she’d experienced over the years came rushing back, eradicating her desire in one rush that stole the heat from her body and left her cold, draped half-naked across her boss’s desk.

Damon turned away with a harsh oath. She closed her eyes, willing herself not to cry. Not in front of him. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of letting him see how much he had affected her. How much he had hurt her.

How could she have thought him different? She sat up, lifting her bodice, the fabric feeling coarse against her skin as she slipped her arms into the sleeves. He was just like all the others, building up her hopes and making her think that maybe, just maybe, she needed to let go for a bit, start to let herself feel.

She slid off his desk and picked up her cello case without a backward glance. She would walk out of here with her head held high and email her boss at New York Executives letting them know she and Damon had had a disagreement and ask to be reassigned. She had never asked them for anything in seven years. They wouldn’t like it, but they would do it.

She started for the door, her heart thudding dully in her chest, one hand wrapped around her cello case like it was a lifeline.

“Evolet.”

She almost didn’t stop. But something in his voice, the harsh darkness coating her name, made her stop.

When she looked back, it was to see him perched on the edge of his desk, one hand in his pants pocket, the other pinching the bridge of his nose.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” she said breezily in what she hoped was a voice that sounded like an experienced woman of the world and not a foolish virgin. “I’m sure I—”

“It wasn’t you,” he cut her off.

When he looked up, she nearly took a step back at the restrained passion that glowed in his eyes, a bright green fire that jump-started her heart back into a rapid dance that made her feel dizzy.

“I want you, Evolet. I want you, and I nearly took you right here on this desk.”

Why didn’t you?

She cleared her throat. “I noticed.”

His choked laugh sounded anything but amused. “I’m your boss, Evolet. Your boss. I’ve never kissed an employee, let alone started to make love to one.”

“Technically I’m New York Executives’ employee.”

He waved her comment aside. “Don’t make excuses for me or what happened here tonight. I owe you my profound apology for taking advantage of you like that.”

Some of her earlier irritation started to return. “Funny, it seemed more like a joint effort to me.”

“Whatever it was, it can’t and won’t happen again. I understand if you want to seek employment elsewhere.”

Her mouth dropped open. “Are you firing me?”

“No. Just assuring you that if you choose to leave, I will make sure you have nothing but glowing references and the full amount for your contract with Bradford Global.”

Her mind raced, his first words echoing in her mind.

I want you, Evolet. I want you, and I nearly took you...

An idea popped into her head. A completely mad, utterly ridiculous idea. But the more she examined it, the more it made sense. Not a decision to be made lightly nor in the heat of the moment.

But, she thought as she tilted her chin up, after a good night’s sleep and a little more consideration, it might just be perfect.

“I didn’t do anything here tonight I didn’t want to. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get home and get some rest. I’ll see you at eight tomorrow morning. Sir.”
