“Then forget I asked. I’ll find someone else since you’re not interested.”

She started to turn away, but he moved quickly, coming up to her so fast she took several steps back until she bumped into the door.

“And how are you going to do that, Evolet? Post an ad online?”

“Not a bad idea,” she fired back. “Do you think Click Here to Deflower a Virgin is too straightforward a title?”

One second they were standing nose to nose. The next he had placed his hands on either side of her head and leaned down until his mouth was so close she could feel his breath feathering across her lips.

“I didn’t say no.”

Warning whispered across the back of her neck as her skin prickled.

“So...is that a yes?”

“Where would this event take place?”

An image of the cramped apartment she’d lived in for the past ten years rose in her mind, her tiny bedroom barely big enough for a bed, her kitchen, living room and dining room all smooshed together in a space smaller than Damon’s office.

“Um... I hadn’t got that far.”

“I’ll pick the location, then.”

Her heart sped up. “So that’s a yes?”

“Are you comfortable continuing to work for me?”

“With you,” she corrected. “Like I said last night, you’re not my boss.”

He made a noise that sounded almost like a growl. “Semantics.”

“Not to me.” She swallowed hard. “But I understand if the dynamic isn’t one you’re comfortable with. I could ask to be reassigned, or we could just not—”

He moved a fraction closer, cutting her off midsentence with his proximity.

“I’ll respect your interpretation of our roles. But if at any point that changes, Evolet,” he said, his voice turning harsh with emotion, “you tell me. Tell me, and I’ll stop.”

Touched, her hand came up before she could stop herself. Her palm settled on his cheek. He turned his head and pressed a heated kiss to her skin that made her gasp.

“Once the proposal is submitted, then.”

Relief spiraled through her, followed by the intoxicating beat of anticipation mixed with desire. “Yes.”

His gaze intensified. “Why me?”

“What?”

“Why me, Evolet?”

She started to make a joke, to pass it off as something not that important. But the way he looked at her, with something vulnerable flashing for a heartbeat, made her pause.

“Do you remember when we danced at the gala?”

“Vividly.”

“You asked me to trust you.” His eyes sharpened. “I did. It was the first time I trusted someone like that with my body in...ever. And you took care of me. I stumbled, and you caught me. We have something intense and sexy between us, which is a bonus. But...” She licked her lips. “I trust you. I want my first time to be with someone I trust.”

Finally, he moved. He kissed her, fierce and hot, before he pulled back and walked back to his desk. She stood there, her back pressed against the door, her lips swollen to the touch.
