I didn’t deserve such trust. Not after the way I had treated her over the past twenty-four hours. But that was the beauty of Olympia. Her capacity for forgiveness and understanding was something I had always admired. It made her a level-headed leader, one that was far more patient than I could ever be.

Even when I had been at my worst, she had seen the best in me. It was a rare gift. Every part of me did not wish to squander something so precious.

Even as guilt threatened to tear a hole in my heart, I savored the sensation of Olympia—the feeling of her closeness, and the serenity of her company. The chaotic world beyond our embrace could wait. In this moment, all that mattered was the gentle puffs breath against my shoulder, and the way her limbs twined around mine. The taste of her essence still sweetened my tongue.

Goddess, she resonated in my heart like a long-lost melody that had finally found its way back.

“Zoei.”

This time, I didn’t hesitate. The moment her lips curved sleepily around my name, I pressed a kiss to the pinkened pout. They were soft and inviting, meeting mine with a sweet, intoxicating warmth.

I explored the dip of her neck and the pulsing lure of her mating gland. It throbbed under the indents of my teeth, and the little noises she made sent shivers through my blood.

I sat back, savoring the taste of her skin on my tongue. But a glance into her eyes made me pause. A shadow of regret lingered there—it was as though a silent conflict raged within her, a battle between her desires and the weight of some unspoken burden.

Her gaze, once filled with passion, now held a hint of sadness.

Cryssa.

Guilt weighed heavily on her, and I could see the turmoil in her eyes as she grappled with the commitment she had made. A part of me empathized with her, understanding the complexities of a political union and the obligations on her shoulders.

But beneath the understanding was an undeniable surge of jealousy. It flayed me, leaving me raw and terribly vulnerable. The thought of Olympia being bound to another, sharing her life with someone else, ignited a fierce envy within.

She was mine! Goddess damn it all.

The weight of conflicting emotions was too much to bear. I stepped into my clothes, buttons flying off in haste.

“Zoei?” she called out, the hesitation and question obvious in her tone.

But I didn’t look back. I couldn’t.

I didn’t dare.

Because the moment I took in her sleep-softened skin, I would fall into her arms again.

It was foolish of me to presume that each step away from Olympia would allay the frustration and jealousy that bubbled in my stomach like acid.

No such luck.

The ill feelings followed me as I fled down the stairs, looking over my shoulder as though they were ghosts on my tail.

I jumped visibly when I turned a corner to find Cameron blocking my path to the library.

“Here are the documents you requested, Your Majesty.”

My assistant’s voice was a much-needed reprieve. I turned to him, wondering if my uncertainty and anguish were plain as day on my face. His blank features gave nothing away.

At my nod, we entered the library. His bootheels clicked on the stone ground, and despite the travel, he looked supremely put together, without even a single wisp of hair out of place.

“Tell me what you found,” I said as he pulled a leather folder from his case.

“I’m not authorized to read council documents,” he stated almost mechanically. “I don’t have the clearance for it.”

I glanced at my assistant of twelve years.

“Come on, Cam. We both know you’ve memorized each letter, word for word.”

A corner of his lips twitched. “Perhaps.”
