“Daddy!” Joelle stopped short as she came into the foyer. “I was just out—"
“I know Joelle.” He was waiting for her to come home before calling the relevant authorities.
“Know what? She took off her light jacket, but he noticed the heavy bag she was carrying.
“What’s in the bag?” He started to reach for it and she stepped back.
“I did some shopping.”
“Let me see what’s in the bag.”
“I don’t appreciate the interrogation.” There was a manic light in her eyes that he recognized. “Now, if you would excuse me, I am going up to my room. I am tired.”
“I have seen the things in your locked box.”
She turned around then, eyes fluttering. “You invaded my privacy?”
“What have you done honey?”
“I have not done anything. How dare you—"She screamed when he grabbed the bag and upended it. Everything spilled out. The extra car keys, Anika’s jacket, and the pregnancy pad she had used. The last thing to fall out was the black wig.
“I can explain—”
“What have you done?”
“Nothing. That bitch made me do it," she said defiantly.
He felt the fear lodging inside him.
“What have you done Joelle?”
“She took him away, Daddy. She took him away and now she is pregnant.” She gave him a pleading look, tears in her eyes. “I had to do something. You understand, don’t you?”
“Joelle, oh honey.” He was weak. “What have you done?”
“You are all against me. I thought you loved me.”
“I do.” His eyes were shadowed with grief. “Why don’t we go to your room and you tell me all about it?”
“You are not mad?” She gave him a hopeful look.
“No. You are my daughter and I love you.” Taking her hand, he led her up the stairs and into her suite. “Why don’t you sit?”
She nodded and sat on the edge of the bed.
“What did you do to her?”
“I took her out to the cabin.”
His heart shuddered. “You mean the decrepit place we used to go to when you were little?”
She nodded.
“So, she is, okay?”
“Yes. I was going to kill her right then but decided to leave her out there. No one is going to find her.”
