Her head resting against her husband’s wide chest, Riley smiled. “I don’t think I can handle any more surprises. You’ve already given me so much.”

At the top of the stairs, he put her down and took her hand. “It’s just to show how happy I am you’ve agreed to be my wife, agreed to change your whole life to be with me.”

He turned away from the side of the house where his bedroom was. “We can change anything you want, but I hope you can make this your office, studio, workplace—whatever you want to call it.” Opening the door to one of the other rooms upstairs, he switched on the light.

She stepped into the room. “Oh, Mitch,” she cried, looking at the freshly painted walls, the desk, the bookcase, the new curtains. “It’s perfect. I’ve never had a separate room I could work in. When did you do all this?”

He pulled her close. “Turns out, the townsfolk of Marietta are very happy to welcome another photographer into their midst. Everyone in town pitched in to help. And now, I’m taking you to our bed.” Picking her up, he walked toward his room. “I know you must be tired, so have a bath and sleep…”

Pulling his head down, she stopped his words. There were things her husband still had to learn about her. Such as the fact that, never mind how tired she was, when he touched her, she was ready for him.

Hours later, she got up and opened the curtains. It was still snowing softly. Hugging herself, she smiled. Warmth and peace. Her heart had finally settled. She’d found her home where a heart had been waiting for her—in Marietta.

The End
