Brady looked at Elizabeth and they both started laughing. “I’d be an overprotective dad and make her life miserable.”

Shaking her head, Elizabeth changed the subject and asked him what he had been doing all summer. She found out that he went on a quick vacation to the beach with some of his fraternity brothers, then settled in working with his father at their family construction business. He told her a lot about the company, and that his goal is to learn as much as he can so he can take it over when his dad gets ready to retire.

They talked about friends from college. Trina’s moving to the beach, and Elizabeth told him about going back to the boutique to work for now. They walked and talked for a good hour. Filling each other in on family, friends, and summertime happenings.

The sun was beginning to set, and the night was turning cool, when Elizabeth’s phone vibrated in her pocket. She took it out, read the text, and looked at Brady.

“It’s Jessica. She wanted me to know that she and Chad are at the car, whenever I’m ready.” She sent Jessica an answer letting her know she’ll be there soon. “It is getting late.”

Elizabeth took his hand, and she led him toward Chad’s car. Jessica and Chad were leaning on it watching Elizabeth and Brady cross the lot.

Brady reached his hand out to shake Chad’s and then Jessica’s. “It was great meeting y’all. Thank you for supporting Elizabeth. I plan on coming to visit soon, we’ll have to grab a bite to eat.”

Chad agreed and Jessica leaned in and gave him a hug. “Thank you for being understanding. She was so nervous about telling you.”

Elizabeth glared at her friend, heat creeping up her face.

Brady reached over to grab Elizabeth’s hand looking her in the eyes. “She doesn’t need to be nervous. I’ll do what I can for our baby.”

Brady said this in a reassuring way, and it made Elizabeth melt.

Seeing the reaction of her friend, Jessica glancing between the two, and was glad to see things seemed to work out. She and Chad, wanting to give them privacy, got into the car to wait.

Brady walked Elizabeth to the passenger door and opened it, but stopped her before she could get in. “Take care of yourself, and I was serious about wanting to come and see you. Let’s plan a date soon.”

Elizabeth nodded in agreement. “That sounds good. We will. Thank you for being so understanding about all this. I know it is a shock.”

Brady looked down at her “Yes, it is, but don’t thank me.” He leaned in and gave her a quick sweet kiss. Elizabeth smiled up at him, ingraining his profile into her memory and got into the car. Brady closed the door, waved, turned, and walked away.

As they pulled out of the parking lot, Jessica turned in her seat to look at her friend. A smile beaming brightly on her face.

“So, that seemed to go really well.”

She could tell by the glow on Elizabeth’s face she agreed.

“Oh, and girl. You were right. He does have a nice ass.” Jessica lifted her eyebrows to emphasize what she thought and quickly turned around.

Elizabeth laughed in shock at that word her friend just used, and the hurt look on Chad’s face.

“Hey, Jess. Remember, I’m driving here.” Chad tried to sound hurt.

Jessica reached her hand over and rubbed it on his thigh. “Don’t worry. Yours is my number one ass.”

“Okay, enough of the language already! That doesn’t work for you. Look, Elizabeth, you’ve corrupted my girlfriend.”

Elizabeth laughed in agreement with his statement. Then leaned her head back against the seat and placed her hands on her stomach and sighed with contentment. She was filled with happiness that the night worked out so well.

Needing a little bit of exercise and fresh air, Elizabeth and her parents decided to go for a walk one night after dinner.

It was a perfect night, and the air was crisp and cool. There was a light breeze and the air smelled like fall, dry leaves on the ground, and fresh cut grass.

This family time brought back memories of when Mr. and Mrs. Parks would walk hand in hand, and Elizabeth would lead them through the neighborhood on her bike.

Elizabeth always loved the way her parents loved each other. Even after thirty years together, nothing has changed. She knew she was lucky to have parents who were still married and crazy about each other. So many of her friends came from divorced households. Looking down at the swell that was unmistakable now, she was hopeful Brady would continue wanting to be a part of the baby’s life, though how their roles would work, she wasn’t sure.

“Mom and Dad.” They both turned toward her. “Brady wants to come down this weekend and meet you both. We talked about him getting here around lunch. Do you think we could have sandwiches and you could get to know him? He really wants to be a part of the baby’s life, so you’ll need to meet him at some point.”

Elizabeth was sure this wouldn’t be a problem, but she was still a little apprehensive.
