Stacey stood, and her eyes narrowed into slits. “I didn’t agree to anything, and I can’t Friday. It’s my birthday, and I have the day off.”

“Well, consider it a present. Happy birthday. I’ll let Mrs. Trowder know what time your interview is. I’ll make it early afternoon.” She nodded and walked out of the office.

Stacey just stood with her mouth open, watching her back as she left. Then pivoted to Nancy. “Is she always like that? She didn’t even listen to me.”

Nancy sighed. “Yep. That’s Doctor Hensley.” She walked back around her desk. “It’s an amazing opportunity, Stacey. Your mom and dad would be proud of you if you took it.” She started typing. “I’ll let you know what time your interview is set up for. Go home, and I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Stacey let out a big breath. “See you tomorrow.”Looks like she has an interview already.

Adler was in the stable when Tristan finally found him. He was brushing one of the chestnut mares, Ginger.

Weird. Adler doesn’t usually like manual labor, even something as simple as brushing a horse.

Talk about money going to his head. That’s Adler. He’s as shallow as it can get. But he’s like a brother, and Tristan needed some bro time.

“What the hell are you doing with a horse brush in your hand?” He leaned against the stable with his arms crossed over his chest.

Adler shot him an eat-shit look. “It’s called brushing out a horse. I do know how. I took her out for a ride. Needed to get some things off my chest.” The stable hand, Jonathon, came and grabbed the reins from Adler and took the horse out to the pasture. Adler placed the brush in the basket, and the guys left.

“What do you have to get off your chest, and who are you?” Tristan had no clue what had gotten into his cousin, but getting things off his chest were weird words coming from Adler. They hopped onto the 4-wheeler. Neither spoke as they took the short ride back to the house.

“Mom sent a text saying she wanted us to eat in the main house if we were going to be home. Are you going?” Adler parked and got out as he talked.

“If you go, I’ll go.” Tristan knew when they were asked to dinner it was usually for something they had to band together for.

“So, you’ll actually be home tonight? I figured you’d be with your new woman.”

Tristan stopped and spun to face his cousin.

He looked pissed. He was pissed.

What did the ladies’ man, who was never home, and always telling him to find himself someone, have against Tristan suddenly doing just that? “What’s going on? You’re pissed. Why?”

Adler pushed past him. “Not pissed.” He stomped through the door into the kitchen.

Tristan followed. “Yeah, right.” He got two beers from the fridge, popped the tops, and handed one to Adler, who leaned back against the counter, his long, muscular legs stretched in front of him. “You’re pissed because I did what you said and finally found someone to spend time with.”

Adler rolled his eyes, just like a child.

“Dude, you’re acting like you’re ten. Not thirty.” Tristan leaned against the counter.

Adler gave him the middle finger. “I didn’t tell you to find a full-time girlfriend, just someone to fill your bed.”

Tristan laughed. “Seriously? You want me to hoe around, like you?” He shook his head. “Yeah, that’s not me. You should know that by now.”

Adler didn’t bite when Tristan said he hoed around. There’s something else wrong. He usually defended himself when that word was thrown out. “There’s something else. What’s wrong? Speak to me.”

Adler finished his beer and slammed it on the counter. “I’m glad you, and what’s her name?” He looked at Tristan with his eyes wrinkled.

“Stacey.”

“Yeah, Stacey. Are doing great. You deserve to have an amazing girl.”

“So do you, Adler,” Tristan interjected.

He nodded. “Funny you say that. I agree.”

He agreed? He agreed he deserved to have an amazing girl? Tristan walked to his cousin with concern and placed the back of his hand on Adler’s forehead. “Nope. No fever.”
