Dr. Hensley smiled at the girls and greeted Stacey by name.

Stacey nodded. “Hi, Dr. Hensley.”

“Are you enjoying your new job? I’m hearing great things about you.”

Stacey glanced at the girls sitting with her, then back to the doctor. “I am, thank you. It was a good move, and I’m enjoying it.”

“Good to hear. Enjoy your day.”

Stacey focused on finishing her lunch. She felt two pairs of eyes watching her every bite. “What?” She tried to look like it wasn’t a big deal.

Gina’s hands were gesturing back and forth between Stacey and the door that had just closed. “So, what was that about?”

Stacey shook her head.

“Dr. Hensley doesn’t usually talk to us low lives. What’s so special about you?” Carla asked. Gina just shrugged.

Stacey couldn’t deny knowing her. She made it obvious they knew each other. “She helped assign all the nurses of the L and D at County. That’s how we met.” Not a lie. That is how they met.

“I don’t think I’ve ever talked to her. Just about her.” Gina stated as she got back to her lunch.

“You would have if you would’ve gone to that party with me last summer,” said Carla.

Gina looked confused.

“You know the hospital had that fundraiser last August. We had to pay like five dollars. Everyone else had to pay a lot. We got a meal at their ranch, and there was dancing”

Recognition dawned on Gina’s face. “That was her house?”

“Yep. You missed out. After the official fundraiser, her sons invited a group of us to stay later. We partied at their ‘guest house.’” She put air quotes around guest house. “I come from money, but their guest house was amazing. And their pool… anyway, you missed out on a really good time.” Carla’s face lit up as she finished her lunch. “She has an amazing son. He’s so hot, such an amazing kisser, and a body to die for.”

Gina slapped her friend. “Get out. You got some with the rich bitch’s son?”

Carla wagged her brows.

Stacey was shocked. “Adler? You got it on with Adler?”

Gina’s eyes went wide. “What, you know her son, too?”

Carla waved her hands to erase the comments. “Not Adler. Her other son. Tristan.”

Stacey’s stomach fell and her heart stopped. She didn’t comment. Just listened as Carla described Tristan. His smoky eyes. His soft brown hair. How his body felt when she touched him. Stacey’s heart was beating hard. Her stomach churned. He just told her he hadn’t been with anyone in over a year. This was just last summer. She heard enough. She had to get back to work.

Her heart and head were not in the rest of her shift. She turned on autopilot mode and finished her night that way. As soon as she was in her car, she thought over what she heard.

Carla knew Tristan. They met just last summer. She counted on her fingers. August to March is seven months. Tristan told her he hadn’t been with anyone in over a year. Again, Tristan lied. Why didn’t he just tell her the truth? Her pulse drummed at her temple. She felt a headache coming on. What the hell was his problem?

She sent him a quick text telling him she was tired and he shouldn’t come over. She wanted to go right to bed.

But, not surprisingly, when she pulled up to her house, his truck was sitting there, and his amazing body was sitting on the deck waiting for her.

Luckily, Kristen and Jacob weren’t home.

She got out and stood strong. That sick feeling that had been entering her stomach lately whenever things didn’t feel right with Tristan showed its ugly face, and her head throbbed. She rubbed her temples.

“Hey, gorgeous.” His smile lit his features. The crease presented itself. Are you okay?

She needed to ignore all those pieces of him that had their way of getting to her. His concern and the way he called her gorgeous. That damn crease. She returned his hug but knew he could tell something was off. She shook her head and walked away as her sight turned blurry. But she quickly stopped and took a breath. Face him now and get this out in the open. She turned on him and wiped harshly at her face as the tears fell. “I don’t understand you. Why can’t you just tell the truth?” She pulled in a shaky breath.
