Jacob nodded.

Kristen stared at him.Why is he nodding? Her heart stopped, and her breath caught.

“You’re right. I won’t live with you full-time until we’re married, and you don’t want a big wedding. So, let’s get married at the county court house, and with all the money we don’t spend, we’ll go on an amazing honeymoon and finish up your house.”

Her jaw dropped. She stopped breathing. Shock. She’s in shock.

Jacob’s hand pushed on her chin. Her mouth closed.

Did he just say that? The smirk on his face says yes.

“So, what do you think? Will you marry me?”

“Is that a real proposal?” her voice came out quietly. Almost a whisper.

Jacob lowered his head so their eyes met. Again, he nodded. “Yes. I love you. I’ve always loved you. I want to marry you and have your babies.”

Her eyes went wide. “Babies?”

His laughter came from deep within his chest. “Yes, babies. Our babies will be adorable.” He brushed her hair out of her face. “We’ll go to the courthouse. A justice of the peace. Stacey will stand for you, Chad for me. We’ll have a small celebration with friends here in the yard. A small, simple, no-nonsense wedding. Just like you always wanted.”

She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. That’s not his dream wedding. It’s hers. “But you always wanted the big church wedding.”

He held her head in his hands. “I want to be married to you. I love you, and you love me. Everything else doesn’t matter. I won’t move in with you, officially, until we’re married, so say yes.”

She looked away, but he held on to her head, and her gaze couldn’t look far.

“What do you say?”

Her heart had always beat for him. She dreamed of marrying this man for so long. Her eyes filled, and she blinked quickly to hold back the tears. “Of course, I’ll marry you. You’re the only one I’ve ever loved.”

His smile reached his eyes as he crushed his lips on hers and wrapped her in his arms.

She was getting married to Jacob. They are going to be together forever. Her insides swam with emotion. Her heart swelled. She will have little Jacobs. Even that thought didn’t scare her.

He was right. Their babies will be perfect. Wow. Mrs. Kristen Kempt. Her smile met her eyes.

Fairy tales do come true.

“She’s avoiding us.” Jacob placed a cup of fresh coffee in front of Kristin. He joined her outside on the deck as she was enjoying the pleasant spring morning, worrying about Stacey.

It was Saturday, and it’s been two days since Stacey’s abrupt entrance into the house. She hasn’t answered Kristen’s text, left for work at the crack of dawn yesterday and stayed out late. They don’t know if she’s even been home, as her car was gone when they both got up. A random glass sitting in the sink was the only evidence that someone else had been in the house outside of the two of them.

Kristen looked up at him, concern in her eyes and creasing her face. “I know. I just sent her a text. I told her that I was worried and needed to talk to her. I really want to tell her about us. I want her to be the first to know.” She sighed. She wasn’t used to feeling bad for others, but this is Stacey. Stacey has always taken care of her and been there for her. I’m the worst friend. What should I do? What if I don’t say the right things?

“She’s fine. Maybe she took an extra shift at the hospital and didn’t tell us.” Jacob started to rub her back.

Kristen didn’t think so but couldn’t prove him wrong, so she returned to the second thing on her mind. “So, with her not around, when are we going to tell people our news?” She still couldn’t believe this was happening. They were going to look at rings today. Suddenly, her finger felt empty and naked.

Hmm naked. The corners of her mouth ticked up. Last night. Her heart sped up. It was a good night celebrating.

Jacob placed a kiss on her lips, which brought her back to the present. “What has you all in thought world? I hope still not my sister.”

Kristen shook her head. “No, I was just remembering our celebration last night and the night before.” She got up and sat on his lap. “Sex has always been fun, but engagement sex has been…Wow! If I knew being engaged would be this amazing, I would have encouraged you to propose sooner.”

“Really?”

She nodded and placed a kiss on his lips. Mmm. “You are amazing,” she whispered. “I love you.”
