Stacey sat. What got into him? He’s never pulled out her chair.

Jacob went and got the chicken from the oven and veggies and mashed potatoes from the stove. This was a lot of fuss. There must be something big going on.

“Chad, do you have any clue?” Stacey gestured around the table and kitchen.

He shook his head and looked as confused as she was.

“Where’s Jessica?” she asked.

“Jacob just invited me. Said it was just going to be us four, so she went to see Grams.”

They filled their plates and started eating.

Jacob and Kristen kept glancing at each other, and Kristen couldn’t sit still.

This behavior was crazy and so out of character. Stacey has known Kristen forever and has never seen her nervous at all. Not even when they had to do impromptu speeches in English class. Kristen just grabbed her topic, glanced at it briefly, and sauntered to the front of the class. She took up her two minutes, like speaking about the evolution of future man was something she studied every day.

Stacey racked her brain for what could be causing her friend’s nerves to be on edge. She looked around the table. Everyone was sipping wine except for Kristen. She had sweet tea. She prefers wine. Why isn’t she drinking wine?

Then it hit her like a ton of bricks. Stacey’s fork clattered to the table, and her eyes went wide. “HOLY SHIT!!” She hollered.

Chad spilled his glass of wine. “Fuck!” He reached for napkins as the wine spread like blood over the table. “What was that for, Stace? You scared me to death.”

She reached over to help him mop up the mess that she caused. “I know what’s going on.” She whisper-yelled at him.

Jacob and Kristen froze.

Stacey jumped up from the table. “Kristen hasn’t sat still since we started eating. She isn’t drinking wine like the rest of us. The only thing that could ever make her that nervous and not drink is simple.”

She turned to Chad. “I’m gonna be an aunt.”

Chad’s eyes got wide. Finally, what she said registered, and he jumped up, almost spilling his wine again. “Shit. You’re right.” He grabbed Jacob and wrapped him in a hug. “Dude. You’re gonna be a dad. Congratulations.”

Stacey was up clapping and trying to get to Kristen.

Kristen’s eyes were as wide as saucers, and Jacob was pushing Chad off him.

“HEY!” Kristen yelled at the top of her voice.

They all froze.

“I’m not pregnant!”

Jacob finally successfully pulled away from Chad, straightened his shirt, wrapped his arms around Kristen, and held her close.

Stacey started. “Are you sure? I mean, I’ve never seen you…”

“Yes, she’s sure.” Jacob looked at Kristen.

Both of them were so in love. It was great watching them together. She watched it start so many years ago. But then what…Suddenly, her breath caught. She just connected all the dots.

“We’re getting married.” Jacob blurted it out.

Her heart swelled with happiness for her two favorite people. Her eyes swam with tears as she pulled them both into a hug, with Chad wrapping all three of them together like a burrito.

Stacey grabbed a napkin and handed one to Kristen. The girls wiped their noses and dried their eyes. “When?” She asked.

Jacob nodded to Kristen.
