“Isn’t it a little early?” Addisonreplied.

“I have to shower and change. I have a call to make as well,” hesaid.

The waitress placed the bill on the table and both Jerry and Mackenzie reached forit.

“I’ll get this,” Jerry said. “Lauren and I are not in a rush to leave justyet.”

We stood to say goodbye. I held out my hand and Mackenzie took it. “Mr. Miller,” Isaid.

Addison ignored my outstretched hand and pulled me into a huginstead.

“It was great to meet you, Lauren. Hopefully we can do this again, soon,” shesaid.

I smiled instead of giving a reply. I slumped back into my seat as theyleft.

“I didn’t know he was married,” Jerrysaid.

“I think they’re separated, or maybedivorced.”

“How do you knowthat?”

“Gabriellasaid.”

“Sure doesn’t look like it was an acrimonioussplit.”

“No, doesn’t, doesit?”

I picked up a clean glass and filled it with wine. I handed the bottle to Jerry, who topped up hisown.

For a moment we were silent. I kept my eyes down, looking at thetable.

“Lauren,” Jerry said. I raised my gaze slowly tohis.

“Aw fuck, babe. It’s him, isn’t it? The mysteryman.”

I let a tear roll down mycheek.

“You cannot say a word, Jerry. You need to promise methat.”

“I won’t but, Jesus, Lauren! And there was me wittering on about their marriage. Are they married orwhat?”

“I don’t know. They’re separated or divorced, like Isaid.”

“He hasn’t toldyou?”

“We’re not dating, Jerry. Just…spending some timetogether.”

‘You are on dangerous groundhere.”

“Iknow.”

He took a sip of his wine and for a while he wouldn’t meet my gaze. He looked hurt. I placed my hand on hisarm.

“You’re my friend, Jerry, probably my only friend. I wouldn’t risk that friendship for anything,” Isaid.

“I know, but sure doesn’t feel good to know you’respending timewith him.” He gave me a sadsmile.

“I’ve fucked up, haven’t I?” Iwhispered.
