We walked in and I kicked off my shoes. Before I could remove my jacket, he punched me square in the face. I was so stunned that for a few seconds I didn’t move. I was frozen. Then I fell backwards, hitting the small coffee table.

“Do you normally let him kiss you?” he said, looming over me. His fists were clenched tight.

“No, and you bloody well know that,” I said, trying to scoot back and out of his way.

“You embarrassed me in front of your colleagues,” he shouted.

“You embarrassed yourself,” I said, shouting back at him. That earned me a kick to my hip. I cried out in pain.

Tears began to slip from my eyes. “Just go, Andrew. We’ll talk about this tomorrow,” I said, desperately wanting him out of my flat.

“There’s nothing to talk about, Amber,” he dragged out the sound of my name. “You’re having an affair with him, aren’t you? Bet his wife doesn’t know. Mind you, he can have you. I’d rather his wife anyway. We can do a swap. How about that? Bet she’s fucking great in bed. She can suck my cock any day.”

I closed my eyes, not wanting to see the spittle that left his mouth, and he bent down close to me. He grabbed the front of my shirt and tried to lift me from the floor. I clawed at his hands until the material tore, and I fell back down.

“Nothing but whores, the lot of you,” he said. He started to mumble something before collapsing onto the bed.

I lay still for what seemed like an age. When I heard him snoring, I slid out from under his legs and stood. I hurt. My nose was bleeding and my eye stung. Andrew was flat on his back with his feet still on the floor. I didn’t want to touch him, move him, for fear of him waking up. I walked to the bathroom and locked the door.

At first, even though I stood in front of the mirror, I didn’t want to look. I kept my eyes closed, but I could hear a drip and taste the blood that ran from my nose and pooled on my lips.

When I finally did open my eyes, I cried out.

My nose was red and bloodied, swollen, and I had a black eye. I peeled down the top of my trousers to see a large black bruise on my hip. I silently cried some more.

I ran a bath, hoping that might help the bruising come out quicker. I could still hear him snoring and knew I wouldn’t leave the bathroom until I felt safe. I sank into the bath and wetted a face cloth. I placed that over my nose and eyes, hoping the warmth and steam would help. I wanted to sob, but I was too afraid to make a noise.

I think I drifted off; until a knock at the door startled me awake.

“Amber, can we talk?”

I didn’t answer him.

“I know you’re in there,” he added.

“You need to leave,” I said.

“I can’t do that until we’ve spoken.”

“I have nothing to say right now. Leave, Andrew.”

I felt braver behind the locked door, but still apprehensive. It has such a flimsy lock he could kick the door open in a few seconds. He didn’t, though. I heard him shuffle and then the front door open and closed.

I sighed. I wasn’t rushing out of the bath, however. I wasn’t stupid enough to think he might have actually left. And I was right. Ten minutes later, he knocked on the door again.

“I will call the police if you don’t leave,” I said, shaking with fear and the cooled water.

“No you won’t, Amber. You love me. I love you. This is just a blip, nothing we can’t get over,” he said.

I frowned. “Do you really believe that?”

“Yes, we’re made for each other. I know, I was an arsehole, and I’ll apologise to all involved, I promise. I get jealous, you know that. I—”

“You’re not blaming me for this one, Andrew,” I said, interrupting him. “You’ve gone too far this time.”

He didn’t respond, and a few minutes later I heard the door open and close again. I gave it another ten minutes before I climbed from the bath, stiffly, and wrapped myself in a towel. I sat on the edge of the bath, listening. There was nothing, no noise at all. I felt safe enough, then to open the bathroom door.

Andrew had left. I rushed to the front door and slid over the safety chain. He didn’t have a key, but I wasn’t taking any chances.
