I was thankful that I hadn’t handed in my tenancy and still had somewhere to live.

“You’d love it here. The views are amazing. I love to sit in the evenings just looking out. Do you remember the floor to ceiling windows? I put a couple of chairs facing them with a small table between. You said about doing that, didn’t you? Anyway, in the evenings it’s fantastic.”

I could picture the scene and smiled.

“I bet it is.”

“Perhaps you’d like to come and see. Nothing more, just a visit,” he said.

I hesitated. “Perhaps,” I replied.

“No rush. Now I have to go, got an early start. Did I tell you I got that promotion?”

“You didn’t, congratulations. You worked hard for that, but don’t let it take up all your life,” I said. I was genuinely pleased for him; he’d wanted that promotion for a long time.

He laughed. “I have a new life to look forward to. One, I hope that you’ll be part of.”

“Maybe,” I replied.

We said our goodbyes, and I slowly placed the handset back down. I did enjoy talking to him. I missed him. I was still very wary of him, though.

He wore me down eventually. Only a month later, I stood in his lounge looking at the view he’d told me about and agreeing how wonderful it was. I walked around as he talked about all the new appliances the flat had. How the shower was so powerful, and the bath so deep.

“Do you want a glass of wine?” he asked.

I stared at him. “I’m not drinking, but I’d like to offer you one,” he added.

I nodded. “Okay, and please don’t think you can’t have a glass with me. I’m sure you’ve learned what your tolerances are now.”

He smiled as he uncorked a bottle of red. He sniffed the cork. “That trip to France, the vineyard I told you about. That’s where this wine came from. I’d still love to do that trip one day. You said you wanted to travel.”

“I still do, I just never seem to have enough money anymore.”

The rent on my flat had increased, shopping bills were going up, the country was heading for a recession, so we were told.

“I’d still love if you moved in here,” he said, quietly.

I didn’t answer. He stepped towards me until we were toe to toe. I tried hard not to flinch. “Can I kiss you?” he whispered.

I nodded. He lowered his head and gently kissed my lips. He pulled back just a fraction, his eyes searching mine. He kept his arms down by his side. I placed mine around his neck and he kissed me hard. He took my breath away with his passion. It was the kiss I’d dreamed of; one he’d never given me before.

I moaned gently, and that, I guess, was his cue.

He lifted me up and carried me to the bedroom. I didn’t protest at all when he undressed me and then fell to his knees. He kissed my body, all of it, before returning to my lips.

His love making was the kind that I’d been desperate for from the beginning. He spent time to make sure he’s satisfied me, that I orgasmed for the very first time. When he slid himself above me, he stilled.

“I love you, Amber, so much.”

It was the love making I’d read about. The passionate combining of two bodies. Everything that came before it was forgotten. It was just us in the moment. I wanted to shed tears. This was what I deserved.

A week later, I handed back the keys to my flat and moved in with Andrew. It was a bittersweet day. I’d loved my little flat. It had served me well for the years I’d spent at uni. My landlady was sad to see me go, Joanie shed a couple of tears. I promised her that I’d visit, knowing full well I doubted I would.

Bill, however, wasn’t as gracious.

“I think you’re making a huge mistake, Amber,” he said when I gave him my new address. “A leopard never changes its spots.”

“Thank you for caring about me. I really do appreciate it, but he has changed. He’s having therapy, he’d different, I promise you.”
