It didn’t work.

“Shut up, Amber.”

We drove home in silence.

We hadn’t got far from the car when he grabbed hold of my arm, swinging me around to face him.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing? Trying to make me look like an idiot, were you? Flirting with the one person I can’t stand.”

“I wasn’t doing anything, and I wasn’t flirting. I didn’t know you didn’t like Daniel.”

“Daniel! Daniel is it? On first-name terms, are we? I bet you want to fuck him, don’t you?” He pushed me hard, and I stumbled back against the wall.

“You’re not doing this again, Andrew.”

He stepped close, his face just an inch from mine. “Do what, Amber?”

“You’re being unreasonable and you’re not manhandling me,” I replied.

He laughed manically. “Manhandling me,” he said in a childlike voice. “Bet you wouldn’t say no to himmanhandlingyou.”

I sighed. “You’re being ridiculous. I was doing what you asked me to do. I was—”

The slap to my face rattled my teeth. The second slap gave me whiplash.

Andrew grabbed hold of my hair and dragged me along to the lift. I cried out, screamed, but stairwell absorbed the sound.

He jabbed at the lift so hard I thought he’d break it.

“Andrew! Let go of me,” I shouted. He ignored me, of course.

When the lift doors opened, he threw me forwards. I stumbled onto my knees, my hair falling from its bun.

“Not again. Not a-fucking-gain,” I said, standing up. “You will not lay one fucking finger on me,” I shouted, pointing at him. I was so angry.

He looked amused. “You have a disgusting mouth,” he said.

And then he punched me just like a man would punch another. Like a boxer trying to score top points.

I cried, holding my face as I stumbled back. “You dare swear at me? Remember, I dragged you up from the gutter and I can put you back there. You’re nothing without me.”

I covered my ears and let the blood drip from my nose to the carpet of the lift. I looked up, hoping to see a camera, and when the lift pinged, I prayed someone would be there.

We were alone.

“Move,” he said, pushing me along the corridor.

“I’m not going into that flat. I’m done, we’re done,” I said.

He laughed again. “Sure.”

He held the back of my neck while he opened the door, then threw me inside. I watched as if in slow motion as he released the buckle from his belt. He slid the leather through the loops and wrapped one end around his hand.

The whoosh as it flew before connecting with me was louder than the crack as it hit the skin on my back. I was stunned at first. There was no pain, initially.

He whipped me again.

“I bet you like that, don’t you?” he said, breathing so hard he had snot leaking from his nose.
