Which Paimon had to accept and respect.

The result was predictable when you think about it. Even a fool like Belial could see it.

Paimon’s a fallen angel. They’re all designed to be unlovable.

Cassiel, angel of tears.

Oh, how he wept.

He loved you, and you murdered him. Ate his eyes and heart to keep him inside. And you lied, after, didn’t you? Told yourself it wasn’t that gruesome. That it was quick. That you didn’t get a raging erection when his golden blood covered your body.

Hell, he misses Lauren?iu, and even Adrian. Their dry, easy banter.

It feels like an eternity that he’s been staring down into the abyss.

When he stands, his legs shudder like water.

Paimon rotates the ranger hat in both his hands. He catches sight of the golden thread-like scar on his hand.

He needs to vent and clear his head.

He needs to talk to somebody.

He needs to talk to Lucifer.

Chapter 20

Lauren?iu

Lauren?iu doesn’t know how long he’s been kneeling on the floor with his arms crossed over his chest until Adrian finds him. They stand in the doorway, enter to set a hand on his shoulder, and stay there until he stands.

They don’t talk about what happens; they go outside and practice changing into mist.

Inside, Daisy paces with her tail between her legs before going into the lit fireplace and curling up there.

Two days pass. He spends most of the time in bed he used to share with Paimon. Contemplating too little, too much. He tugs at his bottom lip.

Lauren?iu finds his fingers messing with the crystal at his neck often. Paimon hadn’t asked for it back, so he could be on Earth indefinitely. He pauses to numbly regard the golden scars on his hand.

One late evening, Adrian sets a hand on the doorframe. “Want to train? I’ve been practicing.”

“All right.”

That time, behind the house, Adrian manages to transform into mist and float in the air, maintaining the form for over a minute.

When Adrian returns to normal, Lauren?iu offers a gentle smile. “Good.”

Adrian’s shoulder twitches, but as if they can’t accept Lauren?iu’s kindness, they change the subject.

“You know, I know it’s a terrible vampire cliché, but we really should bring back cloaks. They’re stylish. I think it’d look good, going from mist to having a flowing cloak.”

Lauren?iu doesn’t answer.

Adrian gives an exaggerated sigh. “I never thought I’d miss the smell of brimstone.” They point to Daisy. “Except for this.”

Daisy, in her true form, wags her tail, but then her red eyes darken, and she lowers her head and whines.

She misses Paimon.
