Koa shook his head. “You’re a grown-ass man. You need to take better care of yourself.”

“Yes, Mom,” Dane sniped back as the doors opened.

The carpet in the elevator was beige and so thick his soles sunk deep. How much money did you need to buy carpet that felt like a freaking cloud? The plush luxury continued into the hallway.

The cream-colored wallpapered walls were broken up by artwork by local artists, hanging every fifteen feet or so. The thick carpet absorbed sounds, so their steps were deadened. The whole building screamed money, but more, it stated back east money. No teals or pinks here.

“Must be nice,” Dane mumbled.

“Owens is dead, so maybe not so much,” Koa replied.

“You got me there.”

They turned right one more time and came to a stop in front of Owens’s unit. It was a corner unit, which helped with what they were about to do. Koa leaned on the doorframe, effectively blocking the view of the camera high on the wall behind them.

“You know,” Dane said as he got out his lockpick tools, “it would’ve made more sense to get a warrant.”

"I thought of that,” Cain said into the earbud. “But Bertrand said to wait. He didn’t want to alert anyone to this location until after we’d searched it. He doesn’t want any information about the motherboards to fall into the wrong hands.”

“Who are ‘the wrong hands?’ Koa asked.

“He didn’t say,” Cain responded.

Dane had the lock open in seconds and swung the door open.

“You’re pretty good at that,” Koa commented as they hurried in.

He grinned. “A benefit of my misspent youth.”

“Good to know.” Koa pulled out a cloth and wiped the outside doorknob. He closed the door and wiped the inside knob as well. Then he pulled on gloves, and Dane did the same.

“We’re in,” Dane announced.

“Roger that.” Cain’s voice sounded tinny through the comms.

“Do we chance the lights?”

Koa shrugged. “We’re twenty floors up. Do you think anyone will notice?”

“Let’s not chance it.”

They each pulled out a penlight and bounced the beams around the apartment.

“Pulling up the schematics for the building now,” Jace said. “You are in the corner of the living space. The balcony with the view of the beach is directly ahead, and the majority of the room goes to your left. Slightly forward and on the right is the kitchen. There should be a dining space in front of the windows. There is one bedroom to the left of the living room.”

Dane looked and located the door to the bedroom.

Jace continued, “It has a bathroom in it. On the other side of the kitchen is the main bedroom. It also has a balcony.”

“Thanks.” Dane was about to ask Koa what he wanted to search first, but the Hawaiian was already moving toward the living area. Fair enough. He headed through the kitchen to the main bedroom. He could work his way back toward Koa.

As he moved through the kitchen area, he noted the stainless-steel appliances and the granite countertops.Must be nice.He wasn’t going to sell drugs for it, but he could see the appeal. Life at the beach must be fine.

He entered the bedroom and swept the area with the penlight, cataloging the layout. Bed against the far wall. Flat-screen TV beside him. Hallway to the bathroom with closets lining the walls on the right. He started in the far corner of the room, closest to the balcony doors. Nothing in the curtains or under them. He searched the nightstand, but it was empty. Lifting the mattress, he found nothing but it must have been dusty because he sneezed. There was nothing beneath the bed either.

He went over to the chest of drawers the TV was sitting on. There were stacks of underwear and socks, a few T-shirts and a couple pairs of shorts. There were about five bathing suits as well, so he must have spent a lot of time either at the pool or on the beach.Candyland.

He checked the second nightstand. The drawer was full of condoms. Nice.Asshole.He started down the hallway, stopping only to check the closets on each side. A couple of Hawaiian shirts hung in one closet, but nothing in the other. He entered the bathroom. The toilet was directly ahead of him. To the left was the sink and across from it, a glassed-in shower stall. Between the two, on the far wall was an open doorway. He pulled out his gun and then quickly advanced, penlight and gun raised.
