“You two need to get your asses out of there,” Tac said. “She’s just exited the elevator.”

“Fuck, it’s too late. She’ll see us.” Koa moved out of the closet. “I’ll hide in the other room’s closet. You stay here.”

Dane quickly shoved the book into the cargo pocket of his pants and closed the door to the safe. He hit the lights and then opened the doors to the cabinet with the bathrobes and sex toys and climbed in. He leaned against the back wall and tried not to think about where all the stuff that was currently touching his back had been previously. He shuffled the robes back to hang in front of him. It could be worse, he told himself, but he just couldn’t think ofhowat the moment.

The wait seemed interminable. “Is she by you?” he said in a low voice.

“She’s been through here.”

“You in the closet?”

“No, under the bed.”

He grinned in the darkness. Koa hiding under the bed seemed hilarious somehow.

“She searched the closet. Did a good job tossing the room.”

“Then how come she didn’t find you?” he asked.

“I dragged a bunch of blankets and sex toys around me so when she looked under and pulled the blankets that’s what she saw. I guess she wasn’t too keen to touch them. Hell, I’m wearing gloves and I want a scalding hot shower after touching them.”

Dane suppressed a smile. “Good thinking.”

The lights in the closet went on. Dane went silent. Rankin did just like he did and started on her left. That meant he had five minutes tops until she reached him. Shit. Maybe he should have hidden under the bed like Koa, except he probably wouldn’t have been able to get down there and up again in any kind of a hurry without destroying his back.

“We’ve got a problem.” Jace sounded stressed.

No shit.

“What kind of problem?” Cain asked.

“There’s a guy at the door to Owens’s apartment. He’s breaking in.”

“You gotta be fucking kidding me! What the hell are the chances?” Tac demanded.

Cass said, “Is he wearing a navy hoodie?”

“Yeah,” Jace swore. “He just opened the door.”

“I saw him, and he’s not alone. There were two of them, both in hoodies. I saw Navy Hoodie enter the building. The guy in the gray hoodie disappeared,” Cass added. “I’ll see if I can find where he went.”

Rankin was at the section next to Dane. If he did nothing, she’d run into the guy in the hoodie. His gut said that was a bad idea. The door to his section opened and the robes moved to the side. Rankin’s eyes grew wide, and he quickly put his hand over her mouth before she could say anything. She tried to fight him off, but he held it tight. “There’s someone else here. Stop fighting me.”

“What are you doing here?” she mumbled through his hand.

“There’s someone else breaking in.”

It took an instant for his whispered words to sink in. She froze. He quickly moved out of the closet, ran across the room, hit the lights, and came flying back inside. He got into the cabinet, pulling her in after him, and was just closing them in when he heard the click of the door opening. Fuck! He needed to move the robes.

He was pushed against the back wall and the sex toys. She was facing him. He crushed her to his chest with one arm as he moved the robes ever so slowly back in place.

She hissed in his ear, “What the hell are you—?”

“Not now,” he whispered directly into her ear as the lights in the closet went on.

She froze. His heart was hammering against his ribs. He was sure she must be able to feel it. Ever so slowly, he pulled his gun from the small of his back. He was worried he would dislodge some of the sex toys, and make a noise somehow, so each movement was excruciatingly slow.

Suddenly, the guy in the closet was speaking. Through the doors, Dane had a sliver of a view. Hoodie was standing directly in front of the safe.Interesting. He didn’t have to search. He knew exactly where it was.
