Tac continued, “Apparently, people have been calling him, but he’s not answering.”

Dane shifted uncomfortably in the Jeep’s passenger seat. When they took off the doors they must have removed the extra padding in the seats. “Does Mac think Lawrence is in trouble?”

“Not sure.” Tac asked, “Where are you guys?”

“We’re not far from Sand Island,” answered Dane. “We were headed there until you told us to meet at the hospital. Where are you guys?”

“We’re grabbing dinner,” Cain cut in. “Do me a favor and run over to Sand Island to CGIS and check on Manu. I sent him over there to see if he could track down Lawrence, and now I’m having second thoughts. I don’t want the kid to get into any trouble.”

“Do you think he’s in danger?” Jace asked.

“Most likely not, but just to be sure. I wanted to keep the kid busy. I’m worried he’ll tell the world that we know Lawrence broke in and stole the GPS. So I asked him to see if he could hack Lawrence’s cell.”

“We’re pulling onto Sand Island now. We’ll call once we talk to Manu.” Dane disconnected just as Jace parked, and they all got out. They started across the parking lot as Cain’s text with Manu’s number arrived.

Dane called immediately. “Hey, Manu, it’s Dane. You’re on speaker, pal.”

“Hi. I just got in. I’m running a triangulation on Casper’s phone. Give me a minute and I’ll…”

Manu trailed off and silence took over the line. “Manu?” Dane’s heart rate ticked up. “Manu? Are you still there?” He increased his speed and approached the doors to CGIS.

“I think…”

“What? I can’t hear you. Are you in trouble?” Dane glanced at Jace and Koa.

“I think this thing is broken.” Manu sounded shocked.

“Why? What’s broken?” Dane paused his hand on the door.

“The coordinates place Casper’s cell at the port. Right next door.”

Dane’s stomach clenched. “Can you tell where exactly?”

“I can probably narrow it down some for you. Are you going to check?”

“Yeah.” As much as he dreaded it, he was going to go check.

“Do you want me to come?” Manu asked.

Jace smiled. “No, kid, it’s fine. You stay here and guide us if we need it.

They all went back across the lot and hopped back into the Jeep. Dane held on to the roll-bar as they headed to the next port over. Three minutes later, they parked and got out. They were walking toward the offices when Jace asked, “What kind of car does Lawrence drive?”

“Good question.” Dane sent a text to Manu and got a reply immediately. “Old blue Ford Mustang.”

“Like that one over there.” Jace pointed.

“Yeah.” Dane pulled his gun from the small of his back and held it down by his side. Jace and Koa followed suit. In the farthest corner of the lot, next to a stack of containers, sat a vintage blue Ford Mustang. Parked well away from any foot traffic and in the shadow of containers that appeared not to have been moved in months.

Jace commented, “It looks like a nineteen-ninety-eight model. That qualifies as old. Was Manu even born then?” As they approached the car, he pointed and asked, “What the hell is that?”

Dane squinted just as the breeze kicked up. His stomach rolled. “Brains.”

“Shit.” Jace blinked.

“He’s been here a while,” Koa mused as they approached the Mustang. “The smell is intense.”

Dane approached the left side of the car while Koa went right. Jace stayed at the rear. All of them had their weapons drawn. Dane crouched low and peered into the window.
