She met his gaze. “Shit. Sorry. I forgot.”

“No apology needed.”

“The file on your accident is in my bag still. I guess we’ll have lots of time to go over it now. Fill in the blanks. I hate having loose ends.”

He smiled. “Thanks.” He was glad she’d trusted him enough to bring it. Mostly, he was just glad she was okay. Seeing her lying there covered in debris had just about done him in. He didn’t want to think about what could have happened. Not just to her, but to all of them.

He cleared his throat. “Why is Weston really here? Did Cross mention it?”

She shook her head slowly, as if afraid she’d scramble her brains. “According to Ainsley, it’s an unofficial visit before he goes to Asia on an ‘official’ visit. I have no idea what that means.”

“It means,” Jace said as he walked back into the room, “Weston is here for some free publicity before he heads to Singapore. He’s holding some talks there with other Asian countries, ostensibly to discuss the whole Taiwan issue, but it’s just a PR stunt. Singapore backs China on the one-state thing, so they won’t support the US view on Taiwan. Weston is up for re-election. He’s just trying to get into the news.”

“Look at you being all up on politics,” Dane said.

Jace grinned. “Had lots of time to read when my knee was healing. Kinda got hooked. Anyway, the hotel is set. I’ll go see how Tac is doing.” He walked out again.

“Let’s make sure we get you organized. Where’s your bag?”

She glanced around the room. “That’s a good question…”

“Where is the last time you saw it?” he asked.

“It’s in your SUV. I left it in there when we went to my place this morning. I should’ve given it to you last night. I guess I just got…distracted.”

He liked the way her cheeks turned pink when she said it. “Yes, last night was a bit…distracting.” He gave her a wicked smile. “When this is all over—"

The door burst open, and Cain stormed in. “We need to move her now. There’s a whole contingent of CGIS agents in the parking lot, and they’re on their way in. We’ll never get her out of here if they get a hold of her. There are going to be questions about last night’s search and about Casper. They might even think we’re crooked as well since we didn’t share anything.”

Dane was on his feet. He looked at Mac. “It’s up to you. Us or them?”

Cain arched a brow. “Tom Rutledge is in the lead.”

Mac tossed a look between Dane and Cain. “Find me some clothes.”

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

Tac walked into the room amid all the chaos. “What’s happening?” he demanded.

“CGIS are on their way in. We need to get her out of here pronto.” Dane opened the closet door, looking for any clothing to put her in. “Nothing.”

“I’ll get her some scrubs.” Cain hustled out.

“Is there any way to slow them down?” Dane asked.

Tac shrugged. “The doc agreed to put her on a no-visitors list. It might slow them a bit.”

Mac racked her brain, but no quick solution was coming to her. Her headache had lessened, but honest to God it hurt to think. “We might just have to make a run for it,” she offered.

Dane nodded. “Tac, bring your truck to the side entrance. We’ll go down the stairs and meet you. Text me when you’re in place.”

“Got it,” Tac said and hurried out of the room.

“Are you sure about this?” Dane asked.

“Yes. There’s no point in staying and talking to them. I have a feeling it will just jam me up. I’d rather apologize than ask permission. Cross made it clear I was on leave so, technically, I’m on vacation.”

Cain burst into the room with a set of scrubs. Mac got off the bed a bit too quickly and almost fell over.
