She turned to see Kian scowling at Bill, and for some reason, she couldn’t stop herself from laughing with delight.

“I see you’re the jealous type, too, dragon mate,” she teased him quietly as she strode up to his side.

“You have no idea,” he growled, pulling her close.

A shiver of anticipation went down her spine and she let him help her into the sled.

“Let’s go home,” he said, and whistled to the dogs.

KIAN

That night, Kian watched as Kinsley wandered through their new home, one hand unconsciously caressing the walls and furnishings as she explored, her face soft with wonder.

The house was a nice little ranch, nothing out of the ordinary, except for the pretty stonework he’d noticed around the fireplaces in each room as he’d gotten them started. But seeing it all through Kinsley’s eyes made Kian appreciate every single detail and amenity.

Lyslee and Avril were sitting on the rocking chairs that graced the front porch, looking out over the icy water and chatting about offering their guard services to the shipping concern that brought the aid packages.

It was clear to Kian how furious the sisters were that they had been unknowingly helping the sheriff keep food from citizens in need. He had no doubt they would make it their business to ensure nothing like that ever happened again. He also wondered if either of them had ever considered running for sheriff.

“It’s lovely,” Kinsley said at last, turning to him. “I can’t believe this is home.”

“We’ll take good care of it,” he told her. “Maybe even add on one day, if we need more space.”

“Why would we need more…” she trailed off.

Her eyes were on his mouth and the space between them was suddenly alive with their shared need.

“Let’s make sure Lyslee and Avril have what they need,” he reminded them both.

They headed out to the porch, and Kian had to smile at the sight of the little one tucked safely in Lyslee’s arms. He had no doubt she’d be well cared for.

“You ready for us to head out?” Avril asked, looking up from the baby in her sister’s arms.

“You have everything you need?” Kinsley asked again. “Cells, diapers, blankets, the extra sling?”

“We have it all, love,” Lyslee told her fondly. “And we’ll just be in your groundskeeper’s cabin, so you can check anytime.”

“We’ll make sure the dogs are fed and happy, too,” Avril added.

“We know you will,” Kinsley said, visibly relaxing.

“Be good for your new aunties, Nova,” Kian said.

Kinsley stilled beside him.

They watched the sisters head out along the darkened path to the cabin in silence.

When they were out of hearing distance, Kinsley turned to him.

“Nova?” she asked gently.

“You can change it if you want,” he allowed.

“Of course not,” she assured him. “It’s lovely. Why did you choose it?”

“It just felt right,” he told her. “I was near the Fy-Rall system when their star went supernova. It was terrifying, beautiful… all-encompassing.”
