“You sound so sure we can do this. Is it so easy for you to force people?”

“Remember they abandoned Kiaran,” Taj growls, “our Kiaran when he was a little child, out in the wilderness to die. It’s a fucking miracle he survived. Don’t go feeling pity for them now.”

“You’re right,” I whisper. Morals are all fine and good until you remember what sort of people you’re dealing with. Oof… More heat washes through me, and my belly clenches.

“Are you okay?” Taj asks.

“Too hot.”

“Sex can bring on your heat faster.”

“Couldn’t you have said so earlier?”

“Would that have made a difference?”

No. He’s right. It’s a vicious circle. I want sex, and sex is bringing my heat closer, which only makes me want more sex.

“Here,” Kiaran says and stops in front of another house—not a burned down one this time, but a perfectly fine, perfectly tall and…

“Gods dammit,” Taj breathes, “your uncle and aunt are filthy rich, aren’t they, Wildman? This house has so many rooms they could have hidden you in one of them and nobody would have ever found you. Instead, they went into all the trouble of carrying you out of town and into the hills. Your Fae-blood must have really upset them.”

“Which means they may be in league with the Temple or the military,” I whisper. “This is a very bad idea. Kia… let’s not do this. Let’s just get out of town. We will be fine.”

“We need food.” Kiaran is chewing on the inside of his cheek, rubbing his fingers over his mouth, his blue eyes intent on the house. “And horses.”

“Kia—”

“They owe.” He nods. “Owe me. At least this.”

“But—”

“We’re going,” Kiaran says, “to bring Finn back. Together.”

A weight lifts off my chest. “Good, but Kia—”

He opens the gate of the house and strides inside. “Come on.”

“You heard the man.” Taj is grinning. “Come on.”

Shaking my head, smiling in spite of everything, I let Taj haul me behind him, his hand wrapped around mine. Hope is flaring in my chest. If Kiaran is with us, part of our clan, my mate, and if he plans on helping us get Finnen back… Then hells yeah, I’ll do whatever it takes.

For my mates, I’ll do anything, everything, and it’s not just my body demanding it anymore, it’s my mind and my heart.

If fate is inevitable, so is love, too.

Kiaran strides straight for the front door and we follow. I’m dazed from all that happened, stumbling after Taj.

Kiaran doesn’t hesitate. He seems much more clear-headed than the rest of us. Frontal assault is the way to go, I suppose. After all, his family can’t be expecting him to be alive, much less show up on their doorstep after all this time.

If they are still alive.

There’s that to consider.

He slams the knocker on the door hard enough to break, and after a couple more of these thwacks, a harried-looking manservant opens the door.
