“Drakoryas eat you,” he says, and I realize he’s following me. Of course he is. “Take you. Kill you. Hurt you.”

“Yes, yes. That’s how you are, you berserkers. But you think you’re different.”

He falls into step beside me, grabs my elbow when my foot slips in a bit of mud. “Different, yes.”

I yank my arm free and he lets go. “Why would you be any different? Why should I believe that?”

A tight, frustrated noise leaves his lips. “Parents. Parents leave… me. Here.”

“Your parents left you here?”

He nods and I stop, turn to face him. “Yes.”

“When?”

“Long ago. I am… little.”

I try to ignore the lump forming in my throat. Finnen had said most berserkers were abandoned in the woods as children for their Fae-blood. This shouldn’t come as a surprise.

“So why do you think you’re different?”

“Parents…” He frowns, looks away. Seems frustrated. “Good.”

“Your parents were good?”

He nods again.

“Okay…” Not sure what he’s trying to tell me. “Then why did they leave you?”

He shrugs.

“If you’re so good and different from other Drakoryas,” I tell him quietly, “you’ll take me back to my mates. Mates. Know this word?”

He shakes his blond, shaggy head.

“Friends?” I try. “Lovers? Or not lovers yet, but maybe one day?”

He’s still frowning.

“They are good,” I finally say, and his frown clears. “Good men. Take me back to them.”

“Stay here,” he says instead. “Danger.”

And there we go, back on page one. “Gods above. I’m going. No, don’t follow me.”

I laugh a little at myself as I walk down the path and his steps don’t follow this time. Maybe I am crazy. We’re in the middle of nowhere, and there are other berserkers out here, maybe wild animals, too, and I don’t know where I’m going. But I need to walk away, to stop my body from taking over and finding excuses for him, excuses that will allow me to sleep with him.

Or try to. He seems as receptive as my other two mates.

Just perfect. I’m a nymphomaniac in lust with three guys who won’t give in to desire.

“Ariadne!” he calls out and I almost stumble at the sound of my name.

He paid attention. He saved my life. He went to find food for me.

And he also stole me from Finnen and Taj, I remind myself.

I keep walking, aware that I should stop, turn back around, talk to him. Beg him to help me. Beg him to take me back. Beg for another touch, another kiss.
