“You okay?” He reaches out to touch my face and I flinch back. “Hurt?”

“I’m fine.”

He flicks his thumb over my cheek anyway, tsks a little in the back of his throat. “I bring food,” he says and is gone once more.

“Why the fuck are we stopping?” Finnen snarls, his arms that are looped around my middle strangling me like a vise.

My horse nickers softly as if he’s laughing at me. The gods are probably rolling on the floor by now. I’ve never felt so useless in my life.

“Because I’ve lost their trail,” I snap. I lean forward in the saddle, Finnen’s arms not loosening one bit, scanning the plain. “Dammit.”

“I thought I was the blind one,” he grumbles.

“It’s kinda hard to follow a trail over rocks.”

“I know it’s rocky ground, I’m not deaf. Are we close to the hills? We’re heading in that direction.”

“We are. How would you know?”

He huffs, his breath ruffling the hair at the back of my neck, sending a shudder through me. “I just know.”

“Come on, fess up. You have no idea.”

“We’re heading south,” he says.

I frown. “Uh… that’s true. How the fuck would you know that?”

He’s stiff as a board behind me. “You mean, you can’t sense the cardinal directions?”

“Me? What am I, a compass?”

He doesn’t offer any other reply and I’m starting to wonder what other Fae gifts he got along with the pointy ears. What other parts of our anatomy could differ. Would his cock—?

“What do we do now, genius?” His annoyed voice makes me grin, despite the situation. “Are we going to stay here all evening?”

“We should make camp.”

“She’s out there! Kidnapped by a Drakoryas!”

“Think I don’t know that?” I snap right back. “Gods above, Finn, I lost the fucking trail. And even I can’t see in the dark.”

“Then what use are you?”

“Hey, ease up with the chokehold, okay? I can’t fucking breathe.”

His arms relax marginally. “You should be able to feel the cardinal points.”

“You think?”

“Just close your eyes,” he says, “and feel the bright south of the world.”

I don’t even bother trying, not sure if he’s being sarcastic. He still sounds pissy. “You mean, all of us with Fae blood can sense the south?”

“Not all, perhaps. I admit… my otherworldly senses have sharpened since I met Ariadne, and we all… got together.”
