“And they produced eggs,” I mutter, annoyed. “I’m not a reptile, either.”

He walks up to me, puts his hands on my hot face and I lean into his touch. “No, you’re not. But we have been amiss in our duties, us, alphas. Your alphas. Of course you need a nest, and since we haven’t provided one for you, you’ve started gathering the materials yourself.”

I swallow hard. “I’m not crazy, then?”

“No more than the necessary amount.” He grins down at me, and my mouth twitches. He smooths his thumbs over my cheeks. “The interesting amount.”

I let out a breathless laugh. “Is that so?”

“Ah-huh. Now, since we are racing to catch up to Finnen, I can’t promise you a nest. But once we get him back, sweets, and we can settle somewhere, I promise to buy you all the cushions and soft fabrics you need for your nest. Do you trust me?”

I nod.

“Good. Now, where the hell is Kiaran? Gods give me strength with that man. Let’s get the horses out and throw him on the saddle, tie him there if necessary. If he has picked another fight, I’ll kick his ass.”

ARIADNE

The blue mantle gets bundled together with the small cushion, and I watch like a hawk as Taj ties them to the back of my saddle together with my blanket.

I hate that I’m so out of control, so governed by my omega impulses, but Taj… he seemed to find it normal. Even cute.

I have to stop stealing stuff for my nest.

My nest… What a weird thing. After he said it, I recalled hearing about omegas needing nests, but I never paid much attention. Back then, it all seemed so far removed from me, omegas might as well be people living on the moon.

I never imagined I would awaken and manifest as one.

Never imagined any of this.

“Kiaran!” I leave Taj with the horses and go looking for him. “Where are you?”

Then step back, stumbling a little, as he strides out of the inn, catching my arm and pulling me toward the horses.

“Soldiers!” he snarls.

“What? Where?”

“Inside. Regiment.”

“Not the Firebrand Bri—”

“No.”

“Shit.”

We hurry to our horses, Taj watching us with arched brows. Kiaran’s stallion is prancing and pulling on the bridle, foam coating his mouth.

“Military is here,” I mutter, grabbing the reins of my mare from his hands.

“Ah. Makes sense Kiaran’s horse is so excited.” He frowns at the stallion. “Calm down, will you?”

The horse whinnies.

Kiaran takes the reins of his horse and turns to level a dark gaze at the inn. “Fuck.”

A group of soldiers comes out, wearing the black and red uniform of the Empire.
