I helped her on, before stepping onto mine, switching it on and leaning forward, feeling it jerk into motion. Ionee did the same, squealing loudly as she started moving along the smooth surface of the now deserted pathway. It was after midnight and most places were closed, but I’d arranged what I’d hoped would be a night that would make her smile. Pete, on the other hand, was fuming. Refusing to step on the Segway, he jogged behind us with a look of thunder of his face.

“This is amazing,” she cried into the clear night.

We wove along the pathway, racing each other, giggling like kids, until we reached our first destination.

“Right, our first stop is right here.”

Stepping off her Segway, she unclipped her helmet, hanging it on the handlebar. “Here? You’re taking me to an aquarium?”

“Shit, I should have gone for a helicopter and a posh dinner, shouldn’t I?” I panicked, wondering if she really had changed.

Reaching out her hand, she wrapped it in mine. “No. This is perfect.”

“I’ve never been to one before,” I admitted.

“Well, I don’t remember if I’ve ever been so we can have a first together.”

Two hours later we left the aquarium with Nee carrying a huge blue seahorse under one arm, her other one firmly linked through mine.

“Thank you. I can’t believe you bought me this. I loved the seahorses, although I’m not sure how I am going to carry it back on the Segway.”

“Segway time is over, beautiful. It’s late.”

“Awww, don’t tell me we have to go back. I’m having so much fun.”

Looking at her now, even if I didn’t have more plans for us, I would have done anything to keep that smile on her face.

Unable to keep my hands off her, I raised it to her cheek, cupping it with my palm. “You having fun with me, Nee?”

“The best.”

“You wanna spend the whole night with me?”

“Arch, I-I…”

“It’s not what you think. I just mean I have more to our date. Are you up for it, even if it means you stay out all night?”

Clapping her hands excitedly, she nodded.

“Come on then, we just need to walk up here.”

Fifteen minutes later, we approached the dock, where Nee let out another excited gasp. “That might be my new favorite sound,” I whispered to her before I shook the captain's hand. Stepping onto the boat, I held out my hand to help Nee on board. Pete, as ever, followed close behind.

“Boots off, Nee.”

“The best three words ever!” Kicking off her boots, she looked around the 12-seater boat. “Where are we going?”

“Sit. Here.” I wrapped a thick blanket around her shoulders, placed another over her lap, and then pulled a black beanie onto her head, before putting my own on. “It’s nearly 4 am. It’s going to be cold on Beer Can Island.”

Bursting into fits of laughter, she readjusted the hat on her head, covering her ears. “You take me to the most romantic sounding places, Arch.”

I wiggled my eyebrows. “Is there room for one more in your blanket protection, or do you want me to freeze?”

“I guess I can share.” Pulling back the blanket, she made room for me at the back of the boat while Pete sat up front with the captain.

“Ready, Archer?” Pete checked. I wrapped my arm around Nee and gave him a thumbs up.

“I’m just making sure you don’t fall out,” I whispered as we started moving.
