A rush of relief slammed through me.

“But?” she questioned.

“But your medication.”

“I take it. Every day. Without fail. Don’t I, Arch?”

I squeezed her hand, never expecting the words that came next.

“Someone’s been tampering with it.”

Silence filled the room before he spoke again.

“As you know, your painkillers are pretty hard core, but what we found in the capsules was over the counter pain medication. It wouldn’t have even touched the sides.”

“I’ve not been taking them as much. My doctor told me to only take them when I needed them. Today was the first day in months that it’s been unbearable. I took a couple this morning, but they didn’t seem to do anything.”

I tried not to interrupt to tell her off for not telling me.

“But that’s not all. In the pill box Archer gave us, your anti-seizure drugs had been emptied, some had a tiny amount of the medication left inside, and worse still, others were mixed with talcum powder, which can cause some pretty horrendous side effects, including headaches and seizures.”

Nee gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

As well as the talc, coming off that medication quickly can cause massive problems, which is why your doctors talked to you about the importance of taking them until you got your six months all clear and then tapering off them under their supervision. When’s your six month check?

“Next month.” She let out a whimper.

“Well, you know you’re tumor free, but I think we’re going to have to keep you on the anti-seizure drugs for another twelve months because we can’t rule out that this was a naturally occurring seizure, although I seriously doubt it. I’m also going to want to keep you in for a few days—to make sure you don’t have another one, but also to give you some treatment to counteract the talc and make sure you don’t have any chest or breathing problems from that.”

“A year? But I was so close to being normal,” she whispered so quietly that I barely heard her.

Bending down, I cupped her cheek. “Hey, you have never been and should never aspire to be normal, Ionee Millar, creator of octopus porn.” A giggle fell from her lips, making me smile.

“Ionee, I have to ask,” the doctor interrupted us. “I’m guessing you didn’t try to poison yourself, so how could someone have tampered with your medication?”

She frowned. “I’m on tour with a band. I leave my bag lying around sometimes, but usually it’s with me. I guess someone could have got to it, but who… why would anyone want to…”

An ice cold realization sank into me. “I’ll fucking kill her myself,” I spat, making the doctor's eyes flare with panic. “I know who it was. Eliza. Earlier, she wished you dead. Told you that you deserved whatever came at you. Fuck, I’ll end her for hurting you,” I yelled. “I have to go and—”

“Archer, sit. Now,” Nee commanded, and my legs followed her instructions without question.

“But…”

“But nothing. You’re no good to me in prison. Calm the fuck down. Call the boys and Marshall, get Pete in here too, and let’s work out a plan. I will not lose you because she is a bitch.”

“Okay.”

“Good boy,” she mouthed.

The tension eased from my shoulders as I reached for her.

“We’ll do this as a team, together. Isn’t that what people who are getting married do?”
