“What else?” I asked.

“Not much. I told you stories about what happened to people who didn’t heed their curses, and then we went back upstairs.”

“There was an angry witch,” Fox said.

“No, there was an angry woman. One of you knocked into her and she spilled a tray of drinks over herself, but you bought her more and she was fine.” She looked guiltily between us. “I’ll be honest, you were fun to play with, so I probably took things a bit far. I whispered a curse I’d made up to each of you. I didn’t think you’d get them tattooed on yourself or even that you’d remember. I mean, what grown person believes in curses?”

Marshall was pacing now. “Where did we get the tattoos?”

She shrugged. “You left the club shortly after, so I have no idea.”

“But the curse… I’ve spent months stuck with people I didn’t want to be with because you decided to fuck with us.” Marshall was yelling now.

“I’m sorry. It was a joke. I didn’t think it would go this far.”

“But things happened when we’ve tried to separate for any reason. Aircon failing, lights blowing out… fuck, Lea left us and minutes later was involved in a car accident that nearly killed her,” he continued, pushing his hand through his hair as if he was about to lose it.

The not-witch tilted her head as if she couldn’t believe what she was having to explain to us. “Your thoughts create things. You thought you were cursed, so you believed everyday things were a result of that curse. Your friend might have been in that crash no matter what you did, but you put it down to something external… out of your control. You gave my words their power.”

“We could sue you for what you’ve done,” I announced.

She let out a soft chuckle. “Sue me for what? You chose to order those drinks. You chose large ones, even though the barman asked if you’d had it before. You got off your faces. You asked for a private tour downstairs. All I did was make up a curse as a joke. You chose to have it tattooed on y’all. You could have come back the next day or even phoned the club to find out if it was real, but you chose to live by it… you stayed together and looked for reasons to reinforce that decision. This is on y’all. I think what you need to ask yourselves is why y’all were so desperate to be stuck together.”

Silence fell over the room, and then Marshall spoke. “Well, I guess we don’t need to feel stuck together anymore. I guess that’s all over and done with.”

Lea

Ipressedmyhandto my mouth as I listened to my life unravel around me, and then Marshall’s words sliced through my soul. I thought we’d gotten past the idea of being stuck together. Maybe he had come to terms with our predicament, but now he had an out and it looked like he’d be taking it.

“Nice to know how you really feel, Marshall. At least now you know you can leave us. And you Dawson. You don’t need to pretend this is what you want anymore.”

I pushed up from my seat, feeling a weird heaviness between my legs, but then my heart felt heavy too, so I just decided my body was mourning the loss of the relationship I’d grown to love.

“Sugar, that’s not what I meant, I—”

I held up my hand to silence him, reaching for the door, but as my hand touched the handle, pain ripped through my stomach again and water hit my shoes. Panic filled me as I turned, my eyes landing on Marshall. “Something’s wrong,” I whispered.

Marshall

Istoodfromtheseat I’d been in while listening to the not-witch explain how we weren’t cursed but had in fact been high on drugs… which I wasn’t sure was a better explanation of events.

I’d not meant my words the way they sounded. I’d meant that the idea of the curse was over and that we weren’t stuck together anymore. But what I didn’t say was that I still wanted them. I was choosing them. Before I could speak, Lea screamed in pain, and it looked like she’d wet herself.

Guiding her back to the sofa, I helped her sit as she screamed out again, gripping my hand. Nee moved out of the way and Fox and Dawson closed in.

“Sugar, look at me. I don’t care about what she said, curse or no curse, you’re mine. I love you. All of you. Since the minute I saw you on that bus, I wanted to be a part of you.” I stroked my fingers over her tattoo. Fate remember? It brought me you and you gave me the confidence to be myself, which brought me them.” I looked up at Fox and Dawson. “I want this. You. I’m choosing y’all.” Then I panicked. “If you still want me.”

Fox leaned down and kissed me quickly on the lips. “I love you too. And there is no way I’m letting any of you go.”

“Dawson,” I asked because he’d not said a word, his face as emotionless as ever.

Just then, Lea’s body arched, and she screamed, blood seeping through the thin material of her dress. “Marshall, what the fuck?” Fox cried as Dawson reached for his phone, calling 911. I looked at the blond who’d just blown up our world. “I need towels, sheets, anything clean, and disposable gloves if you’ve got them. And some scissors.” She nodded and vanished from the room. “Nee, take Archer and Charlie, talk to the mayor, and get everyone to clear out of here, otherwise this is going to be all over social media, and we will have half the city outside with cameras.

Minutes later, I used the scissors to cut Lea’s panties from her body and helped her lie flat on the floor against Fox’s chest so I could examine her. Crying out every few minutes now, I was trying not to panic as I lifted her dress, but what I found was not at all what I expected.
