And she wasn’t available for anything more than what she and Aidan had shared in Hawaii. His being here gave them the opportunity to say goodbye properly.

Then she could turn her attention back to her father and wait until he took his last breath.

And grieve them both.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Aidan handed his creditcard to the man, checking him into the Dufort Hotel in Chicago.

The uniform-clad man frowned, then glanced up.

“Ah, this...”

Aidan lifted a brow, then realized he’d noticed the Dufort name on the black card. “Oh. They’re my cousins. I’m still paying. So charge it up.”

“I need to check,” the man said.

“You need to check to take my money?” Aidan laughed.

“Yes, sir.”

“Okay, well, please hurry. It’s goddamn cold in this town,” he said, shivering in his coat despite the heat in the lobby. Chicago was fucking freezing and coming straight from Hawaii just made it ten times more so.

He’d showered on the jet but was looking forward to another one. Then he would organize more winter clothes to be sent to the hotel and any other necessities while he was here.

“How long are you staying, sir?” the man said when he returned.

Good question.

“Let’s say two weeks,” Aidan replied. If he couldn’t convince Lily to fall in love with him by then, he was off his game and needed a kick in the ass.

But he’d seen it in her eyes.

Perhaps she wasn’t in love with him yet, but she would be.

Heck, maybehewasn’t completely and utterly in love with Lily yet, but he knew he was falling. Just seeing her beautiful face in the hospital today had sent a charge through his heart.
