Lily pressed her lips together.

Jesus, this guy doesn’t give up.

Aidan pointed outside. “The car is right there, Matt. Sorry you didn’t hear that before. Have a good evening.”

He wasn’t going to give the guy an inch. Aidan knew men like him. They tried to manipulate and coerce people. They didn’t like being called out and, as it turned out, that was Aidan’s specialty.

“Thanks, though.” Lily smiled.

My sweet, naïve little peach.

Aidan widened his arms and guided Lily and her mom outside as Lily said a quick goodbye.

Letting them run ahead through the falling snow, to climb in the vehicle, Aidan halted, then turned and held Matt’s gaze for a long moment.

“The name is Adian Dufort,” he said coldly. “Lily has told me all about you.”

“Funny, because she’s never mentioned you,” Matt said, sliding his hands into his pockets, smiling.

Aidan grinned.

“Google me.” Then he jogged to the waiting car.

If Matt had any brains, and he was a lawyer so he must have, then once he learned who he was, he’d realize Lily was now under his protection.

With money came power.

It wasn’t something he very often played with, because, unlike his brother and cousins, he didn’t run massive conglomerates, but he would pull any string he had to. To protect Lily.

Matt would never touch her again.

––––––––

AN HOUR LATER, HE STEPPEDinto Lily’s apartment and handed her the keys.

“This is my humble home,” she said, tossing the keys on the kitchen bench. Which was about two steps from the front door.

It was small.

And in very average—which was being generous—condition.

God, he wanted way more for her, but saying anything of the sort would just prove the stark differences between their lives that Lily was already uncomfortable with.

Thanks, Father.

“Do you want to take a shower?” Aidan asked, pulling off his coat.

Fuck, it was freezing. He found the heat and walked to turn it on, then found Lily staring at the wall.

Right. She was still in shock.

He led her to the bathroom and turned on the taps.

They’d pulled up at Lily’s mom’s place at the same time her aunt arrived in a cab from the airport. Aidan asked Lily if she wanted to stay with them or have him take her home.

In the end, Angela told her to go home and get some rest.

“The next few days are going to be exhausting. Your Aunt Sherie is here, and you have this nice young man looking after you. I’m here if you want to ring.”
