CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Walking back into Lily’sapartment and having her jump into his arms was not something Aidan was going to forget in a hurry.

His mouth had found hers, his bags dropping to the floor, as he wrapped his arms around her lower back, crushing her mouth to his.

God, why wouldn’t she just admit her feelings?

Surely the entire world could see but her.

Aidan was giving her space and time. Hell, her father had just died, but he wasn’t a patient man.

Not when it came to Lily.

And he could see her struggling with her emotions. One minute she was all heart eyes, the next she was chewing her lip and playing with that damn butterfly pendant.

Worrying.

That’s what she was doing.

He’d settled on the sofa, laptop on his knee, and tapped away while Lily curled up next to him, watching TV.

From time to time she snoozed, her small feet pressing into his thigh. When the light dimmed outside, Aidan tugged the blanket from the back of the sofa over her and ordered some food for them.

While he was waiting for the delivery, he packed up his computer and pulled her feet onto her lap, taking control of the remote. Then began to flick through the channels.

“Hey, I was watching that,” her small voice said.

“Your eyes are literally still closed,” Aidan replied, smirking.

He stopped on a sports channel and tickled her foot. She tugged it away and blinked open her eyes with a smile.

“How long was I asleep?”

“Three days,” he teased.

She snort laughed, then her smile faded, and her grief returned. As her face contorted, Aidan pulled her up into his arms and made a whole lot of comforting sounds while he rubbed her back.

“I can’t believe I’ll never see him again. Never speak to him again,” Lily cried, wiping her eyes and slumping back on the sofa.

“He’s out of pain,” Aidan said, knowing how he’d suffered after Lily had shared details of his disease earlier in the day.

“Yeah.” She nodded.

“Are you religious?” he asked.

Lily shrugged. “I want to believe. I’m scared not to, but I don’t go to church.”

“I’m about the same. I believe in something. I just don’t know what,” Aidan admitted.

“Maybe he’s watching us,” Lily said, staring at the ceiling. “If you are, Dad. This is Aidan.”

He smiled. There was something childlike and sweet about Lily, which never failed to warm his heart.

How could he not love this woman?
