“Are you coming with us? Home to the U.S.?”

Decker nods yet seems almost sad. Surely he doesn’t want to stay in Mexico. Or perhaps he does. It has been his home for six long years. And given he put my life at risk to help those other women, it’s starting to sink in that he has priorities that could keep him here.

A slither of resentment that I could have died due to his decision creeps in now that I’m close to being home.

Only I push it away, still feeling grateful to be in his arms. My feelings for him are out of proportion. I know that, but still... still, I want that kiss.

Maybe that’s asking too much.

Everyone goes quiet as we speed through the dark of the night. The luxurious Porsche seems like a strange getaway car, given the circumstances. The bumps in the road are almost cathartic, creating a rhythm as I remain in Decker's arms.

I lift my face to his again and his pained expression returns.

It’s my turn to put my hand on his face. I want to thank him. I want his mouth on mine like I need oxygen.

I need him to own me and tell me he’s never going to let me go. Just for a few hours before we say goodbye.

“Izzy,” he whispers almost desperately, and my heart flutters.

“Thank you,” I rasp, my throat dry.

“I will die before anyone takes you again,” he replies fiercely, and I know he’s feeling guilty.

That’s all it is.

I’m not his and never can be.

He’s not asking me to be. So I don’t fool myself, for even if he did, I could never forgive him for choosing those women over me and putting me through that hell. Selfish, yes. However, I could have been raped, tortured, and killed, so forgive me for being in survival mode. That doesn’t mean I don’t crave Decker’s touch as I grieve the unique bond the two of us have formed this past week.

But this is the end.

Sure enough, as Mack promised, we arrive at a private airfield in just over an hour. I spot the jet and recognize the familiar Barret branding on the tail. It’s hardly covert, not that I’m a military expert, but I figure they know what they are doing.

It’s not illegal to fly into Mexico, but it is illegal to kidnap an American Citizen.

Now, I’m going home.
