“We didn’tget away. We still have miles of country to get across without being stopped. When we cross the border and hit Texas, then you can relax.”

I worry at my bottom lip.

“But no one knows we are missing yet,” I say, even though clearly, I’m not the expert here. “And Pablo is away.”

Questioning a U.S. Marine who has lived undercover with these criminals is probably stupid, however I’m grasping at straws, and he knows it.

“Listen,” Decker says without glancing at me this time. “Pablo has people in every corner of this country. They’ll be looking for us already. So just do as I say, and I will get you home to your family. That includes not phoning them.”

I flinch.

I’d honestly thought we were home-free. My stomach curdles and all the Cheetos start feeling really heavy.

“Can’t I just phone them? Quickly?” I ask after a long moment.

“What do you think will happen if you do? They’ll call the police and get officials involved. Trust me, they’ll just create more problems for us. Half of them work for the cartels. There is a price on your head or mine, so we must lie low,” Decker rumbles.

Tears prickle at my eyes as the whole reality of our situation sinks in even further.

Now, I’m wondering if I will ever get home alive.

DECKER

––––––––

Idrop my sunglassesdown over my eyes and lean an elbow on the door, gripping the steering wheel with my other. Isabelle has turned her head away from me, and I know she’s struggling.

I’ve tried to be as honest with her as possible, and I have, without scaring her to hysterics.

Earlier, when she began humming away to Taylor fucking Swift and munching on her snacks, I knew she thought this was now a smooth trip home.

Sorry darlin’.

I let her have that moment of peace. Hopefully, there will be more of them before we cross the border, even though I can’t promise anything.
