“Sisters don’t look at brothers the way you look at me,” Decker says, and when his eyes meet mine, they silence me.

Because he’s right.

––––––––

INSTEAD OF GOING downthe elevator like ordinary people, Decker leads me to the stairwell. After way too many steps—and I’m a New Yorker, so believe me it was way too many—we step through a door that leads to the car parking garage.

I spot his black Jeep, but he leads me in another direction.

“Hey, Marine. Wrong way.”

“Hey, fake wife. No, it’s not,” he mumbles as we approach a Porsche SUV.

“What are you doing?” I whisper yell.

Decker grabs my wheely suitcase and points at me to go around the other side of the vehicle.

“This isn’t our car.” I’m still whispering loudly, which I realize defeats the purpose, but I’m not about to be done for car theft in Mexico.

Jesus, is he insane?

“Do as I say. Right now,” he gruffs, and there’s a dark edge to his voice that makes me jump into action.

I figure if we’re arrested, I’ll just say I was kidnapped.

Not an accessory.

I search for cameras in the corner of the basement and give a sort ofI tried, but he’s bigger than melook. It might not hold up in court as solid evidence, though it’s worth a try.

I hear a snapping sound, and then Decker rips the car door open and points at me through the glass.

Get in.

Got it.

As I climb into the Porsche, he tosses our suitcases in the back and jumps into the driver’s seat. Then rips open a panel and seconds later, the engine starts and we’re pulling out of the car park with haste.

Holy heck.

I keep up with my innocent, wide-eyed stare for the cameras, figuring they must be everywhere, and a few minutes later, we exit the building, and he floors it.

It’s silent for a moment, then Decker says, “Your Taylor Swift CD is in the backpack.”

My mouth falls open.

That’s kind of... sweet.

“Aren’t you worried you’ll get caught?” I ask. “The police could be after us at any moment.”

Decker side-eyes me. “You really don’t get it, do you? The police are on Pablo’s payroll. If they catch us, we’re back in his hands, and it won’t be so nice this time.”

Nice?

I’d hardly call that experience nice.

“It’s too risky in my Jeep now, so we had to switch it out,” Decker explains as he suddenly turns and stares down at his phone.

I notice he’s looking at a map as I slam into the door of the SUV.
