His eyes hold mine and my heart begins to thud.

“I’m not coming onto you. I’m just saying you’re handsome,” I clarify.

“I didn’t think you were flirting. I know when you want something, you ask.” His voice has gone husky and it's sending shivers through me.

I swallow and clear my throat. “Exactly.”

We lay there, the fan cooling our bodies, and I listen to the sounds of the house.

“What’s your favorite kind of movie?” Decker asks.

I’m so surprised I don’t answer.

“Movie? You must have a favorite genre,” he says again, and it’s almost like he feels awkward asking.

Decker is never awkward.

Not that I’ve seen.

“Action movies. With some hot romance. I don’t really like rom-coms. They’re too cheesy. But I also don’t mind sci-fi. Dramas are too dramatic,” I say, then roll onto my back, thinking, and nearly tip off the mattress.

Decker reaches out and grabs my hip, catching me.

I roll back and our eyes connect, heat flaring between us.

“Thanks.”

“So, men in uniform shooting things, with some kissing in it. And if they are from outer space, that’s cool?” he teases.

Now it’s my turn to smile.

“Firstly, more than kissing. There are some hot movies out these days. And I’m not talking space men, more like monster romance. Although that’s mostly in books.”

“What the fuck is monster romance?” The look on his face nearly has me giggling.

“Don’t ask.” I smirk and drop my eyes, but his hand goes to my chin, nudging them back to meet his. “You can’t stop there. Women fantasize about sex with monsters?”

“They have big... you know.”

“Cars?”

I giggle. Like a stupid girl.

Ugh.

“Sure. Cars.” Knowing I’m blushing, I opt to change the subject. “You? Let me guess, horror movies?”

Decker hesitates and decides to drop the monster inquiry by answering. “Documentaries, mostly. I saw all the action and horror I ever needed in the Middle East when I served.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No need.” He shakes his head and brushes a lock of hair off my shoulder. “And unlike you, I don’t mind the odd cheesy rom-com.”

My eyes widen. “Really?”

One of his shoulders lifts in a shrug. “Sure. My life is pretty dark most of the time, so anything with one of the Jennifer’s or Ryan’s in it is usually a good escape.”

I smile again. Wow, this man is full of surprises. But as my smile fades, reality comes crashing forward.
