ISABELLE

––––––––

I’ve been staring atthe ceiling for what feels like hours when I finally climb off the bed and grab one of Decker's shirts out of his bag to pull over my nightie.

I tie it in a knot around my front and roll up the sleeves.

I look ridiculous, but I don’t care. I can’t lay here ruminating any longer.

When I enter the main room, I see Ana sitting at the table nursing a glass of water, smoking a cigarette, and scrolling on her phone.

It must be at least one in the morning.

“Oh,” I say, glancing around the room.

“He’s out there,” she says, nodding towards the sliding door that goes out to a large balcony. When I head that way, she says, “I would leave him be if I were you.”

I slow and then stop as I see Decker in the shadows, leaning his hands against the railing. Tense. Angry.

I turn to go back to the bedroom.

“Would you like one?” Ana lifts the packet of cigarettes and offers.

I shake my head and wander over, taking a seat. “I don’t smoke. But thanks.”

She nods, gets up and pours me a glass of water. The ice cubes bang loudly in the quiet of the room, reminding me it’s late and that he might be able to hear us. A quick glance outside and I find he hasn’t moved.

Ana sits back down.

I smile and gratefully take a sip of cold liquid.

“He could kill me for asking you this, but are you here of your own free will?” Ana blows the smoke out of the corner of her mouth.

Good question.

I let out a dry laugh and shake my head. “Yes and no.”

She stares at me, waiting for more information, and I know I shouldn’t talk to her about this, but I need to speak to someone.

Clearly Decker is done with me. Or I’m being dramatic, given I’m the virgin and all that.

It might be the latter.
