Only two people have this number. Javier and...

I slide my finger over the green, my heart pounding.

“Deck,” Mack says and, god, it’s good to hear his voice. Even if he is thousands of miles away.

“We’re thirty minutes from landing in Durango Airport.”

Okay, so apparently, he’s not.

“Jesus, Mack. I told you... actually, scrub that. Your timing couldn’t be better.” I let out a dry laugh.

I need my team, and I know he can hear the stress in my fake laugh.

“Call it instincts, buddy. What’s going on?” Mack says.

“They took her. Wait. Who is with you?”

“Nate.”

Yes, fuckingOorah!I might be pissed with him, but having my Marines here is exactly what I need.

A smile creeps onto my lips for a split second. “See you in thirty.”

Then I tell them to divert toAeropuerto de Cuidad Lerdo, a regional airport closer to where I’m located.

––––––––

FIVE MINUTES LATER, I’ve packed up our bags and am standing in the kitchen. Ana doesn’t know, and she won’t until I hear from Javier, but I’ve hidden the ten million pesos in the house.

“But what about—” Ana starts predictably.

“Here’s how this is going to work,” I say, sliding my Glock into the back of my shorts. “I’m going to get Isabelle. If I don’t hear from Javier, then the deal is off. Once I do, I will get the money to you.”

Ana grits her teeth, and I can tell she doesn’t believe me. She has no reason to. Men like me have lied to her all her life.

“I won’t tell you to trust me, but I’ll tell you this, Ana. I am trying to save hundreds of women and children. If you tell your husband to come home, those lives will be on your conscience.”

Her eyes widen and her mouth falls open.

Javier's sister curses something from the stove where she is cooking. My eyes dart to her, my hands on my hips. She grunts and goes back to the food. Then I focus back on Ana.

“Okay.” She nods, glaring at her sister-in-law. “I’ll make sureno onecalls him.”

I huff out a laugh that has zero humor.

“Lives and ten millionpesos. Remember that.Allof you.”

The woman curses at me in Spanish one last time and I just shake my fucking head.

“Shut it,hermana,” Ana snaps at her.

I lift the backpack onto my shoulder and walk towards the door.

“Go. Get Isabelle!” Ana says to me, then walks over and lays a hand on my arm, surprising me. “Your life is dangerous. Take her home to America.”

“I am. I will.”

“Good. Then you need to tell her how you feel about her.” My brows lift at her boldness. Or is it perception? “Life is too short to miss out on love because you are too stubborn to acknowledge it.”
