Her soft chuckle sent a chill through me. “Ironically, Angel. What about you?”

Ironic indeed.

I couldn’t help but let out a strained chuckle in response. “Nikolai. Thank you though, really. Not just anyone is so eager to drag someone out of a crash and help them.” Getting a good look at her now, I started to wonder just how the hell she managed to drag me all this way.

From a quick glance, she was slightly built but small, probably no more than 5’3. The petite Asian was small compared to my burly 6’4 figure, and I knew for a fact I was heavy as a sack of cinder blocks.

Leaning back against the wall fully, I drank in her image, letting my blue eyes run down her body. Her long, black hair was tied back in a loose ponytail, with a few strands falling gracefully, giving her a somewhat disheveled and tired look. Her scrubs concealed most of her figure, making it hard to discern, but I could tell she had a curvy silhouette. The most prominent feature accentuated by her scrubs was her well-defined and rounded bottom.

“Hey, stay with me.” She lightly shook at my shoulders, grabbing my full attention. “How many fingers am I holding up?” Her question was followed by her hand being held inches from my face.

“My head is fine. You’re holding up four fingers, your index, middle, ring, and pinky, if you are wanting specifics.” My head was mostly clear at this point, and I had no trouble recounting things.

“Good. Well, no need to thank me. My conscience wouldn’t have let me live it down if I just drove off. Though, sorry about your buddy, he was gone when I got to him. He bled out.” She nodded towards the driver of my car.

“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure he is given his dues along by way of his family.” Losing people in my line of work wasn’t uncommon. It just sucked that it was one of the ones I trusted. “What about that man?” I couldn’t help but have a nasty tone as I lightly nodded towards the unconscious man next to the SUV.

“Him? I will have no problem leaving for dead. He deserves it. He had a pulse when I checked, unfortunately.” The detest in her voice was clear, and the way she glared in that direction made me wonder just why she hated him so much.

“You know him?” That much was clear, but maybe I could get some information out of her.

“Only in passing and by some family association.” She said through gritted teeth before turning her attention back to my body.

Maybe it wasn’t a coincidence she was here during the crash. What if she had been a part of it? But that wouldn’t make any sense if she saved me and left that man for dead. I was probably overthinking it, but I had to be on edge and think about every possible angle in order to survive in this lifestyle.

“You’re injured.” I noted out loud when I saw the discoloration at the bottom of her pants from the blood seeping through.

“I’ll be fine, it’s nothing deep. I’ll bandage myself later when I get home. You’re the one who needs medical attention right now.” Her face twisted with worry as she looked up at me with those soft, warm brown eyes of hers.

Reaching out, I brushed away some stray strands of her hair and tucked them behind her ear to try and get a better view of her face in the poorly lit alleyway. “I’ll be fine, my help is coming in a few minutes. Don’t damage that pretty face of yours with worry for me.” Her features were soft and delicate, but her eyes were strong.

Carefully, I studied her face, and took in the slight slant of her eyes which gave her an exotic look, the soft bridge of her nose ending with her small button nose, and those heart shaped lips that fit perfectly on her roundish face. She truly lived up to her name in my opinion.

“I’ll stay with you until I see that you are safe.” She sounded determined and stubborn.

Her words made me chuckle because I was never safe, even if I knew what she meant. “You don’t have to, you have done enough. I owe you.”

“I won’t be able to sleep unless I see that you are safe, and you don’t owe me anything. I’m just doing what’s right and needed, so I don’t need to have anything in return.” Generous too. People like her were too good for this rotten world.

Even if she was just doing her job and what was right, she still had a choice in the matter. So, she should be rewarded. “Whether you like it or not, I owe you.” Slowly, I reached into my pocket and fished out a business card and snagged a pen from her pocket, scribbling down my personal number before tucking everything back into her front pocket. “Keep it. If you ever need anything, and I meananything, reach out to me.”

Sighing softly, she looked at me with defeat. “Fine, I’ll keep it, but don’t expect any late night calls any time soon.” The playful edge to her voice made me smile a bit.

I quipped back, “That’s what your lover is for, not me.” Though it could be me, and I definitely wouldn’t mind one bit.

Laughing softly, she looked at me with a half-smile, “If I had a lover, yes. Or is that your way of finding out if I'm single or not?”

“Damn, you caught me. Guilty as charged.” I joked back with a strained laugh and a few coughs.

Before she could say anything else, a car pulled up and a familiar face popped out of the driver’s side. “Oh, thank the heavens you’re okay.” Arseny said with a sigh of relief as he ran over to me.

“Okay? Do I look okay to you?” I bit back with a harsh glare.

“Damn, I was hoping you’d have a major head injury to make you less of a dick,” Arseny joked with a chuckle.

If it were anyone else, then a comment like that would have gotten them in deep shit. Luckily for Arseny, he was my brother, so I let him get away with some—a lot of—things. “Maybe I should break your leg and see how you feel,” I grumbled, hissing in pain when he helped me up with Angel.

“Grab him too.” I told Arseny, nodding towards the unconscious man on the pavement.
