I leaned in, my mouth far too close to his ear. “Just to make it clear, I don’t want to be here. I’d rather be literally anywhere else than in your presence. Now, be a good boy and get me a drink.”

“Fuck you.” He pulled back from me, his eyes flashing with fire.

“Whatever you’re thinking, don’t.” Reuben materialised next to us, his arm around the waist of a gorgeous brunette. “You’re trouble, Jordan Emery.”

Jordan deflated. “Nothing to see here. Just catching up with my bestie.” He blew me a kiss, and I mouthedfuck off, which made him grin. Spinning away, he headed over to his gargantuan fridge and pulled out two bottles of beer. Twisting off the caps, he returned to us, handing one to me. Before I could decide whether to act polite and thank him, he turned his attention to the girl with Reuben.

“Evie. Did you come here on your own?”

Smirking, she peered up at him from beneath her lashes. “It’s not like you to be subtle, Jordan. I came with Livvy and Gracie. Livvy was looking for you earlier.”

Jordan smirked right back at her, and my jaw clenched. “Just what I wanted to hear. Excuse me, guys, but I have someone—I mean, somethingto do.”

I glanced at my phone. I’d stay an hour. That was reasonable. Then I could get out of here and, as I did every time I was subjected to Jordan’s presence, try to forget it had ever happened.

Heading out of the open bifold doors that ran along the back of the house, I stepped out onto the patio. The garden was small for the size of the house, but it was…nice. There was a large patio area, part of it covered, complete with wicker furniture and a small firepit. The bottom half of the garden was grass, with a football goal at the very end. Fairy lights illuminated the space with a soft, golden light. It was far less crowded out here, and the music from the party was muted. Taking a deep breath of the fresh night air, I found myself relaxing for the first time since I’d arrived.

“You’re Theo Lewin, right? I haven’t seen you at one of Jordan’s parties before.”

“Yeah.” I turned to the girl who had spoken to me. She was gorgeous—just my type, with rich brown hair and light blue eyes. I smiled. Things were looking up. “Theo. And you are?”

She licked her soft-looking lips, extending a manicured hand to me. “Livvy.”

Livvy. Was this the same girl Jordan had been looking for? Taking her hand, I pressed a kiss to the back of it. “It’s a pleasure. Can I get you a drink?”

Holding up a bottle, she shook her head. “No, but you can stay and keep me company.”

“Hmm.” Taking a step closer, I leaned in, watching her pupils dilate. “I think I might.”

“What the fuck!”

In the kitchen, just about to help myself to another drink, I suddenly found myself pinned up against the wall with an arm across my throat. Blinking, I recalibrated, focusing on my assailant.

Jordan. Fucking wonderful.

“What do you mean?” I raised a brow at him.

“You. This,” he ground out, raising his hand and dragging the pad of his index finger across my lip, his gaze fixed on my mouth. My eyes widened at the completely unexpected move, my breath stuttering. “You have her lipstick all over you.”

I cleared my throat. “There’s no rules that say I can’t partake in a completely consensual kiss, is there?”

“Partake in a kiss,” he muttered. “Who the fuck says things like that?” Then he lifted his eyes to mine, pinning me with his grey-green-blue gaze. “Livvy was here for me. You knew that, and that’s why you decided to hit on her.”

“You really want to do this? Grant’s right there.” I gave a subtle nod to the left.

“Yes, I really do, fucker.” He drew back, wrapping his fingers around my bicep, and then yanked me in the direction of a white door. Tugging it open, he shoved me through into a small utility room, flipping on a light and slamming the door behind us.

“What the fuck is your problem?” Folding his arms across his chest, he stared me down. “There are tons of girls here. Why did you do it? Are you purposely trying to piss me off so I look bad in front of the team? Because Grant specifically asked me to be on my best behaviour?” His eyes widened. “That’s it, isn’t it? You want me to snap because you know this will get back to Harvey and give him yet another reason to get rid of me.”

What?

“Slow down with the conspiracy theories. For your information, she approached me. Why would I turn her down? She’s gorgeous.”

His jaw clenched. “Fine. Whatever. This party was ruined from the minute I saw your face.” Spinning on his heel, he turned to leave.

“Wait.” My arm shot out, and I grabbed his wrist, stopping him in his tracks. “Harvey’s not going to get rid of you. You must know that.”
