“What’s this about?” Roman flung himself onto the sofa next to Tristan with a deck of cards in hand. After cocking his eyebrow at me and receiving a nod in return, he began dealing the cards between the three of us.

“Knox left the party with Elena,” Tristan informed him, handing him the joint.

After inhaling, he placed the joint down on the ashtray I’d placed on the coffee table, replacing it with his beer. He raised his brows, turning to me. “You fucked her? I would.”

I gritted my teeth. I didn’t want to talk about my ill-advised moment with that fucking lying little temptress. At least I’d done one thing right—getting my dad to pay for her driving lessons meant that I no longer had to give her lifts home from school because the instructor was picking her up daily.

I still had to take her to school, but it was a relief to be able to chill with my best mates after school instead of playing fucking chauffeur.

“I caught her in my room, going through my stuff,” I told them. It was the truth, and it would stop them asking questions I didn’t want to answer.

“What the fuck?” Tristan leaned forwards in his seat, his sly smirk wiped away, replaced with anger.

Roman froze in the process of dealing the cards, staring at me. “Yeah, I echo that. What the fuck?”

“She picked the lock, and she was going through my bedside drawers when I found her. Thing is, I don’t even know what she was looking for. What the fuck do I have that she would want?”

“Condoms?” Roman suggested, and I rolled my eyes again.

“Yeah, no. You don’t break into someone’s bedroom for condoms.”

Shooting Tristan a sideways glance, he grinned. “Tris tried to break into your room here during the party to get some.”

I turned on Tristan. “You what? What the fuck happened to the ones I gave you?”

He shrugged unrepentantly. “Used them.”

“Fucking hell, if you’re getting through them that fast, maybe you should think about keeping your dick in your trousers.”

“You already said that, and I said, where’s the fun in that?” he reminded me. “But yeah, I wasn’t seriously trying to break in. Ro’s making it sound worse than it was. I only tried the door.”

“Okay, whatever. She wasn’t looking for condoms. That’s not the only thing either.” I gave them a rundown of the details of the shady guy I’d seen leaving, her sudden interest in working at the country club that I frequented, and how she gave off a vibe that I couldn’t really even articulate, but it put me on edge. There was something about her and her mother that I didn’t trust.

Tristan picked at the label on his beer bottle, his eyes meeting mine as Roman finished dealing the cards. “Fuck. That’s a lot to take in. I don’t get it, though. What would she be looking for? Why would she be meeting up with random men in the shit part of town?”

Taking a long swig from my beer, I shrugged. “Fuck knows. That’s the problem.”

“We didn’t want you to be away from us, but maybe it was for the best,” Tristan mused, picking up his cards and examining them. “This girl needs to be watched closely so we can work out what she’s up to.”

I nodded my head as I swiped my own cards from the coffee table. “We’ll keep an eye out, but for now, I’m just gonna wait and see what happens. I’ve got someone looking into her background too. Maybe they’ll find something, maybe they won’t, but Iknowthere’s something going on with her.”

I fell silent as we began to play, pushing the shit with Elena to the back of my mind. Finally, I began to relax, appreciating this moment with my friends, talking about inconsequential, irrelevant shit, dissecting our most recent lacrosse match, betting on who Tristan would fuck next…just having this bonding time that I’d missed out on ever since Elena had dropped into my life.

Roman and Tristan had both made plans to meet up with girls—something I’d usually be doing too, but for some fucking reason, I wasn’t feeling it—so I ended up leaving earlier than I’d planned. I checked the time—my dad would probably still be at the office, workaholic that he was, so I headed into town to see if I could catch him. Maybe he wanted to head down to the country club for a drink.

On the way to his office, I passed a bookshop that was still open, and I paused for a second outside the door before ducking inside.

When I exited ten minutes later, I shoved my purchases into my school bag and then dug my phone out of my pocket to silence the incessant buzzing.

Wait.

Fuck. It was ringing, and the caller display saidNitro.

I immediately swiped to answer. “Hello?”

“Finally. You’re a hard man to get hold of,” came the voice from the other end. “Thought I’d better call you with an update. Are you somewhere you can talk?”
