“Prince Razak told me, Zayan, how he’d lay you on your back and cut you.” His fingers skimmed some more, sweeping down to my hip. “He said you’d only come with a knife and his cock inside you.”

I gritted my teeth and fluttered any feelings away. What was one man’s lust, when I’d toyed with so many?

“Each of these scars is a testament to your ecstasy,” he went on, skimming his fingers up, over where my ribs jutted from having my arms pulled back. “Each one a mark of pleasure and pain. The truth of it is quite beautiful.” He peered into my eyes. “As are you.”

Razak had told Bendrik all this about me to torture him, knowing Bendrik wouldneverget his hands on me.

Yet, here I was, caught and exposed. Razak wasn’t here to save me from Bendrik’s desires. Chained, with little hope of escape, Ididneed my brother. And that was a more disturbing thought than having this man drool all over me and potentially stick his cock into whatever hole and crevice he pleased.

My top lip curled of its own accord. “Fuck me, and he’ll take a finger for each time your cock violates his property.”

Bendrik stole his hand back, curling his precious fingers into his palm. “Oh, I know.” He leaned close and whispered, “You might just be worth it.”

He sashayed backward, his hungry gaze admiring me with every step. “I have some matters to attend. I’ll return soon. Rest now, save your strength. And do not worry, this will not be a task. You’re going to enjoy our time together.”

I rather enjoyed my freedom too, but he wasn’t about to give me that.

He left the room; only the sound of my own heart disturbed the quiet. I gave the cuffs an experimental tug. Even if I could slip my right hand free, as I had to escape Razak’s cuff in the past, the left wouldn’t give as easily.

The table of nasty-looking tools was several strides away and far beyond my reach.

I wasn’t escaping the chains without Bendrik’s help. He’d have his fun with me, and eventually, he’d want more. Men always did. That would require he uncuff me…

His pleasure was his weakness, and my strength.

All I had to do was endure and wait for an opportunity.

The exact same as I’d been doing my whole life.

CHAPTER21

Arin

I fumed in the carriage,at Lark, at myself, at the whole world.

The sun rose, dragging blue skies over a distant, hilly horizon. We passed through villages, over bridges, down roads, on and on, farther and farther from Lark. I’d tried to sleep during the night, but every time I’d closed my eyes, I’d seen Lark on those wretched steps, waiting to be captured. He could have run. Why hadn’t he?

He’dallowedthem to capture him.

The more I fumed, the more I hated—andloved—him.

For a new life,he’d said. He’d saved me. But I didn’t need saving, I needed Lark.

He’d sent me off with coin in my pocket and didn’t expect to see me again. He didn’t know me at all, if he thought I’d walk away. Heshouldknow me. I thought we’d gotten past all the lies and misdirection. He should have told me his plan, should haveaskedme. We could have talked it through. Although, he hadn’t known the council had seen through his act, so he hadn’t planned to shove me on the carriage without him. That realization must have come to him in the tower stairwell. But still…

And his parting words: Don’t trust Draven. What was I supposed to make of that? Draven was all I had left who Icouldtrust.

The galloping horses slowed and the carriage drew to a halt. Through the window, fields and forests covered rolling hills. I hated that too, because it meant I was so far away from Pain that the rain and storms couldn’t reach me here. Lark couldn’t reach me.

The coach rocked, the driver jumped down, and slotted his key into the lock.

I kicked the door open, lunged at the reeling driver, grabbed him, and flung him against the side of the carriage. “Take me back!”

“Can’t do that,” the man grumbled. His hat had knocked askew, half covering his face.

I grabbed his neck and squeezed, then felt the press of something hard and cold in my side. Some kind of weapon. Driving a royal coach like this, he’d of course be armed. The driver nodded, advising I let go.

With a snarl, I freed him and stepped back. He aimed the tip of his short sword at my chest.
