CHAPTER42

Octavius

The cage had been builtinto the Atlas compound blast crater far below ground level and stood several stories high. Too big to hold a nyk, it had to be for somethingother.

Octavius stood on the extended walkway that acted like a bridge to the middle of the cage wall. Next to the cage, he was a small thing, insignificant. And he didn’t much like that feeling.

Whatever Mikalis’s reasons for building it, he hoped it wasn’t needed.

But feared the worst.

Nothing had changed inside him. The impending sense of dread hadn’t waned. He still felt as though a delicate balance was about to tip off a ledge, as though they were all about to fall. They’d stopped Raiden, Mikalis was gone, and Nyx—or whatever that creature had been—appeared to have vanished. But he wasn’t alone in fearing this wasn’t over. The Brotherhood was on its knees, here and across the world. Atlas was as much dust as the nyks they’d killed during the New York uprising. And the world now knew monsters were real.

He had Saint, and Jayden, but it didn’t feel like a happy ending. It felt like the beginning of something far worse than had come before. It felt as though whatever came next, the Brotherhood would need to be stronger, better, harder, and they’d need their godtouched alongside them to have any chance of surviving.

What have you done.

Octavius withdrew a crumpled note from his pocket, found by Zaine in the office Mikalis had been using here, and read the words again.

History is written by the winners

Nothing else, no date, no explanation, just those six words.

Hegrasped the safety rail and stared at the enormous metal and glass cage.

There was one fear that stuck in his mind, a fear that haunted him whenever he closed his eyes.

When it came to Mikalis, he feared he’d made a terrible mistake.
