Her eyes bounced over to me. “Well, as much as he wouldloveto meet Vinny Lewis’s niece, I think he would prefer that this meeting take place in total privacy—just the two of you.”

My heart sank, fear creeping into my chest.

Is this guy behind the hit? Maybe he has tight ties with the club?

I glanced over to Gunner, who gave me a knowing glance—he must’ve been thinking the same thing. “I would really prefer to stay in the company of Viper.”

Meredith raised a brow at me. “Oh, my dear, that is not how this works. If Charlie wants to see someone alone, that is what he does. I promise we’ll takegreatcare of your lover. Charlie is a very prompt man, and he doesn’t like to waste time. He’ll be back to you before you even know that he’s gone.”

“Of course.” I swallowed hard, biting my tongue as Viper squeezed my hand.

“I would like to know why the president is not attending this meeting with him,” Tippy spoke up, his face going a shade of crimson. “We do business deals together.”

“Oh,” Meredith tilted her head at him. “I don’t think this has anything to do with business—and he specifically asked for Viper to attend this meeting with himalone.I’m sure that you can keep the lovely Ms. Mullins here comfortable while you wait for his return. Oh, andyou.” She pointed to Gunner, who looked more uncomfortable than the rest of us. “You might want to drink some water.”

“Probably,” Gunner squeaked.

With that, Meredith threaded her arm through Viper’s and led him away from the three of us. Viper looked back at me, giving me a reassuring glance—but the dark hue of fear in his eyes gave him away.

What is happening?

I spun around to Gunner, grabbing his arm and dragging him away from Tippy. “What thehellis happening? Are they going to kill him back there?”

Gunner shrugged, his eyes wide. “I don’t know, Hannah. I’ve never even been to one of these crazy fucking parties. I always thought they were like orgies or something—not a Hollywood meets murder party. It makes so much sense, though.”

“Do you thinkCharlieis the one who put the hit on him?”

Gunner opened his mouth but didn’t have a chance to answer as Tippy joined us, placing his hand on my shoulder.

“You need to relax, Hannah.” He handed me a glass of champagne. “Loosen up a little and have a drink. He won’t be gone long.”

I nod, taking the glass of champagne from him. “Thanks.”

“No problem.” Tippy then turned to Gunner. “Why don’t you go ahead and go see what kind of parking situation the bikes are in? I saw some more people showing up—and the last thing we need is for a bunch of yoo-hoos blocking us in.”

“I don’t think I’m supposed to leave Hannah...”

“Dude, she’s fine. She’s with me, justgo.”

“Fine, fine. I’ll be right back then.”

I watched as Gunner headed toward the main front doors. Letting out a sigh, I turned back to Tippy, who was on his phone.

So much for decent company.

Though maybe Icouldget a look around.

My lips grazed the glass of champagne, and I let the initially sweet liquid slip past them, tasting a bit dry on my tongue. I pulled the glass away from my face, my eyes taking in the mostly clear liquid. Something about it tasted...

Off.

Chapter 28

Viper

I need to be out there with Hannah.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a lot of shit to work out with Charlie, but that didn’t change the fact that I felt sick leaving Hannah out there alone with Gunner and Tippy to protect her. I swallowed the bile rising in my throat as I followed Meredith up the stairs, the whole mansion feeling duller and darker as I made my way to Charlie’s office on the top floor. I didnotlike going to the man’s office...
