Vinny only shrugged. “I’ll wait for you in the car.” He turned and left us, my attention turning to Hannah.

“You can’t be serious about sending me off?” her voice cracked as tears filled her eyes. “I mean, I know that you said—”

“No, this is just what’s best, Hannah,” I cut her off, not even wanting to hear what she had to say. It was easier to just cut the ties. “I care too much to let you stay here.”

“I’ll help her to the car,” Gunner appeared, taking her arm and taking her gently from my grip.

I nodded, running my hand along my jaw, my heart shattering into a million pieces as he led her away. However, as Gunner opened the passenger door for her, I rushed for the car. I pulled her from his grip, taking her lips in a hot and heavy kiss. A moan escaped from her throat, her tongue tasting bitter against mine as I ran my fingers through her hair.

Fucking hell, I don’t want her to go.

“Okay, that’s enough,” Vinny’s voice sounded gruff. “We need to get on the road.”

Hannah pulled away from me, taking a seat and looking up at me. Our eyes locked as I stepped back, and Ihatedmyself for what I was doing...

But it was just best.

Sheneversaid she wanted this life.

She grabbed the handle, opening her mouth to say something to me—but she didn’t. Instead, she slammed the door right in my face...

Leaving me standing there like an idiot as the car backed away.

I’ll get over her...

Maybe.

Chapter 31

Hannah

“I can’t believe how big of a hit that article was,” Vinny grunted as I took a seat in his office. “The romantic spin was something else, too—a little desperate, maybe—but I get it.”

I chewed the inside of my cheek, the hard copy of the article sitting in my lap. “It wasn’t really a lifestyle article, was it?” My eyes scanned the page, seeing the love story of Viper and I playing out on the page. As much as it hurt, it was the best thing I had ever written, and it was published as fiction—and I had adjusted the names ofeveryonewhile also changing some of the events.

But the underlying story was still there.

Minus all the hot sex.

“I think that you should start some sort of story column like this,” Vinny said to me, shrugging his shoulders. “Unless you don’t think you can produce something like this again?”

“You know the answer to that.”

“Yeah, I know.” He let out a deep chuckle. “But it was worth a shot. I’m just glad we had such a good response to it. I was worried about our readers rejecting it—fiction and all.”

“Yeah, but they didn’t,” I gave him a smirk before pushing myself up and out of the chair. “Looks like I still have it.”

Vinny’s face contorted with sympathy. “I know things have been rough since what happened in Sans Verta.”

“He wouldn’t even answer my calls,” my voice dropped off, the pain still fresh three months later. “I never understood that.”

“He’s just trying to protect you.”

“Right.” I shook my head, spinning on my heel and leaving his office before he could go off on his tangent again. Vinny was adamant that Viper loved me—and that’s how I had written my article.

But I wasn’t sure I believed it.

I mean, aftereverythingwe went through, how could he possibly think that I wasn’t the right fit for that life? Iwantedto be there with him.
