“I don’t think so.” Sargent Johnston confirmed what his son had said. “I think we’re going to have to go to some desperate measures, but—”

“We’re not going to fuckin’ whack a cop,” Viper snapped. “Absolutely not. That’s the fastest way to get the spotlight right on the club. You said you wanted us on the right side of the town’s opinion.”

“Yeah, but this is part of the cleanup that we need done, or we’reallgoing to prison for this one.”

Oh shit. I do not want to go back there.

“I just find it interesting that you have the nerve to come into my clubhouse, tell me we need to straighten up our reputation, and then you fucking drop that we need to off one of your officers? Brilliant strategy, Sarge.”

He rolled his eyes in response. “Look men, I get it, butbothare true. I don’t want Francis offed. I just want him scared fucking shitless—maybe get him to resign. Ifthatdoesn’t work, then…”

Viper cut him off with a groan. “Fine. But your dainty little boy there is going with us.”

“What? No.” Robbie shook his head. “I don’t want any chance that I’m going to be viewed as a dirty cop.”

“Yet, you got the nerve to stand here in our clubhouse and expect us to take care of your problem.”

“He’ll go with you.” Sargent sent a warning look to his son. “You just tell me where to send him, and he’ll be there.”

“All right.” Viper nodded.

I glanced around the room, the tension between us all so thick it could’ve been cut with a knife.

This is gonna be fun.

Chapter 5

Hallie

You’re better off without him.

That’s what I kept telling myself as I pulled into the school parking lot to drop Iris off. I could see that she was nervous, but she still had a smile on her face. She was tough, growing up without answers about her dad. She had only ever asked me one time, but I knew the day was coming when she’d want the full story…

And I would have to give it to her.

I just hoped that she wouldn’t hate me.

“Do you want me to walk you in?” I asked her, meeting her green eyes in the rearview mirror. “I don’t mind parking.”

“Mom, this might be a new school, but I’m not a baby.” She rolled her eyes, undoing her seatbelt. “I can handle it.”

“Okay, okay.” I held my hands up in surrender and pulled into the drop off line. “I just want to make sure that I do everything I can to ensure that you have a good first day.”

“You seriously act like I’m in kindergarten or something.”

So much sass.

“I know that you’re not.”

“Will Granny pick me up today?” Her attitude dissipated at the mention of my mom. “She said that you have to work until five.”

“Yeah, I do, and yes, she will pick you up.”

“Yes!” Iris squealed in delight, hurriedly gathering her backpack and slipping her arms into the straps. “This is going to besoawesome living here.”

“Yeah, for sure,” I grumbled, feigning a smile as I inched forward. My mind flickered back to the way that I had left Gunner, storming out of the clubhouse so fast that he didn’t even know what hit him.

What was even worse was that I had to wait for an Uber to pick me up and take me back to the café—and in a town like Sans Verta, that wasreallyexpensive. Thankfully, the medium-sized town sits right outside of a bigger college town, so while it was pricey, at least an Uber was available. In all that time of waiting, which was a solid fifteen minutes, Gunner hadn’t chased after me.
