“Where you headed?” Viper asked as I stepped out onto the front porch of the clubhouse.

“Going for a ride.” I didn’t meet his eyes.

“Gunner…” His voice trailed off. “Don’t go bombard her. If she’s back in town, I’m sure she’s having to adjust to a lot more than just seeing you.”

“I just wanna talk to her about the shit that happened between us. She thinks that I chose the club over her.” I turned to him finally, catching his eye.

“And you don’t know if you would’ve chosen this over her?” His tone had an edge to it, one that made me wonder if it was possible to answer the question wrong.

“… I don’t know.”

He nodded, pulling a cigarette out of his vest pocket. “You chose this club though. You know you’re not fucking bailing now, right?”

I shook my head, swallowing the irritation. “I’m not bailing on the club. I just want Hallie to know that Iwantedher.”

“Right.” He grunted before taking a long draw.

“What’s wrong with you?” I raised an eyebrow at him, noting the perplexed look on his face. “I swear I’m not bailing. This club is my number one priority.”

Viper blew out a puff of smoke, his blue eyes icy as he met my gaze. “I’m not worried about you leaving the club—or your woman troubles. We’ve known each other almost our whole lives. Hallie makes you crazy, but you’ll work that shit out.”

“Yeah.” I felt stupid, realizing that the whole world didn’t revolve around my inner turmoil. “So what’s the deal then? Hannah?”

“Nah, we’re good—great, actually. It’s all this shit with Sarge. I don’t know about going after some fucking cop, man. That breaks the rules. We don’t go after cops—we never have. There’s a reason for it, too.”

“What else are we supposed to do?” My mind shifted from Hallie to this situation, and I leaned against the rail. “We gotta get that warehouse cleared out, too.”

“Yeah, I’m thinking that we should get that done tonight. Sarge said that Francis isn’t on shift tonight. I doubt the guy will be poking around the warehouse.”

I shrugged. “He might be.”

“Then I guess you can go sit and watch his house and make sure he’s not.”

“You would.” I let out sigh, glancing down at the skull tattoos on my hands. “But just send me the address and tell me the time, and I’ll be there.”

“Take the truck. You need to be quiet.”

“Got it, boss.” I shoved my key into my pocket and went back into the clubhouse. I grabbed my keys to my truck and slipped back out the door. Viper gave me an amused look that I ignored as I shuffled down the steps.

“Go easy on her,” Viper called after me. “If you come on too strong, you might scare her off before you ever get a chance to explain.”

“Yeah, I know,” I dismissed him as I opened the door to my black Chevy.

“Maybe leave your prison stint out, too,” Will chuckled as he came around the side of the clubhouse, a backpack slung over his shoulder.

I shook my head, not saying anything as I climbed inside and shut the door. I had no desire to talk about that part of my life—but I also knew that I owed Hallie theentiretruth, not just part of it.

But maybe I won’t mention it tonight.

Watching the clock, I knew I didn’t have long before Hal got off work, so I sped to the other side of the town, whipping into the parking lot right at six-thirty. I parked next to her silver SUV and waited. My boot tapped nervously against the floorboard, knowing there was a chance that she could just fucking ignore me—or tell me off.

And I’d have to respect those wishes.

But I’d be damned if I wasn’t going to try.

My breath caught as she stepped through the doors, her hair whipping around her head. She brushed it out of her face, a laugh escaping her red lips. Taylor Green, her old high school best friend, came out right behind her. They stood there for a few moments, exchanging some kind of happy conversation before waving bye to each other. Neither had any idea that I was sitting there watching.

I knew that Taylor wasn’t a fan of mine. She hadn’t been since Hallie and I had broken up. Every time I ran into her around town, she shot me some dirty look, like somehow that was going to bother me.
