“I could maybe manage two thousand,” I said in a quiet voice. “And I don’t think he’s going to come down that much.”

“I’ll cover it then,” he suggested, squeezing my hand.

“No,” I argued, shaking my head. “There’s no way in hell that I’m going to let you do that. That’s asking way too much of you, and we don’t even know what’s going on between us. I don’t want your money.”

“Fine then.” He pulled his hand away and spun on his heels. My mouth gaped as I thought he was going to walk right out of the house, but instead he went back to the kitchen, where Jeff was, but not before sliding the double doors shut.

Oh shit, what is he going to do?

I heard their low voices exchanging some sort of heated conversation, but the doors being closed muffled whatever they were saying. I stood there, tapping my foot and waiting, wondering what the fuck I was thinking bringing Gunner along.

But then the sliding doors opened, and Jeff poked his head out. “Can you swing eighteen hundred a month?”

My mouth dropped. “Yeah, but…”

He cut me off. “I’ll get the contract.”

Chapter 10

Gunner

Jeff Leed was on our payroll, and despite being a greedy bastard, he didn’t want to lose any of the deals we had going at the time—and that was all it took for him to do me a solid favor, including letting Hallie move in within a few days.

“You didn’t have to bring theentireclub to unload the truck,” Hallie mumbled, eyeing Viper, Axle, Will, and Bear. “All of the neighbors are staring.”

I glanced across the street to a small group of four people, all of whose eyes were focused on us. I shrugged. “They won’t mess with you.”

She let out a sharp breath, blowing a lock of blonde hair that had fallen from her ponytail. “No, they’ll just talk about me behind my back to everyone on the street.”

I chuckled, shaking my head. “You worry too much about what other people think, Hal.”

She pursed her lips, her face growing serious. “Maybe.”

“It’s good to see you, Hallie,” Viper called over my shoulder as he toted a couple of heavy boxes toward the front door. “It’s been years.”

“Yeah, nice to see you, too, Ronny.” Her voice was strained, though there was a smile on her face. She didn’t like us being there, and for the life of me, I couldn’t understand why. Our presence ensured that no one would think about fucking with her or her daughter, and honestly, that was worth her annoyance at me.

“We could’ve just hired movers,” a familiar voice caught my attention, and I instantly rolled my eyes as Taylor stepped onto the sidewalk from where she had parked her car. “You know what I think about this.”

“I think you make it clear toeveryonewhat you think abouteverything,” I retorted, raising a brow at her.

She shrugged before grabbing Hallie’s hand and dragging her into the house. “Let the men do the heavy lifting, and we’ll start organizing everything. The more you chit-chat with them, the longer they’ll be here.”

Man, she’s fucking annoying.

I bit back my tongue from saying anything though, watching the two women disappear inside. I turned to head back to the moving truck to grab another couple of boxes but paused as a red truck pulled up to the curb. I recognized Hallie’s mom, Linda, instantly, and the little girl she helped out of the backseat was most definitely Iris. She was the spitting image of Hallie, minus…

Green eyes.

They were stunning, glimmering under the sun as she skipped toward me, a bag in her hand. Linda was shuffling behind her, carrying an armful of things.

“I’ll get those for you,” I said to her, offering my help.

She stopped in her tracks, her eyes widening. “Well, it really is you.”

I wasn’t sure how to take her flat tone, but she did let me take the shit she was carrying—which I realized pretty quickly was decorations for Iris’s room. “It’s nice to see you, Linda.” I forced the words out, my tone light and friendly—maybe even coming out a little fake.

“Hmm, well, thanks for helping her move. She’s got a lot of shit for one person.”
